Massey Ferguson 65 diesel: I thought the engine was seized, pulled the injectors, put some automatic transmission fluid into the injector holes and the engine cranked over. I put the injectors back and now the engine will not turn over again. Can this be as simple as a clogged fuel injector or do I have bigger problems. Tractor ran last fall, acted like air was in the system, and then I let it sit for the winter.

Thanks for all suggestions!

If I'm reading this right you're saying:
Engine WILL turn over when it doesn't have to build compression, yet
WILL NOT turn over when it has to build compression.

I don't nothin' 'bout nothin', but could it be a weak starter?

Does it try to rotate?

Can you rotate it with a wrench?

Do you know what hydro-locked is?

What is the voltage on the battery posts (not the cables) when trying to crank?

Does it try to rotate?

The starter turns. I've removed it, and it spins away. It does not turn the engine over on a fresh charge.

I tried to rotate it by towing with another tractor. The engine would not turn.

Do you know what hydro-locked is?

Hydro-locked is what I was hoping to learn more about. How do I un-hydrolock it (other than removing the injector)?

I will check.

If it is hydro-locked, you should see fluid coming out the injector hole, when cranking.

Is the crankcase oil level OK?

Was it in hi-range, high gear when trying to pull start?

When I turned it over with the injector out fluid came out of the injector hole and shot into the sky about 12' high.

The crankcase oil level is a little high, but there is no water.

I had it in low range when trying to pull start it.

Is there a link to another thread on what to do if it hydrolocked?

Thanks for your helpful comments. Is it possible that a stuck injector would keep the engine from turning over?

Fuel that leaked or was forced past the rings would be a concern

That may have saved your engine from damage.

Pull starts should be done in high range, high gear

Your welcome.

Yes, the injector, hopefully only one, is filling the cylinder with fuel.

Thank you for those links. So, if it hydrolocked you can wreck the engine it turns over by towing?

The engine did knock the last time it ran (when it started). I'm thinking that I'll send the injectors to the shop and see if that takes care of the problem (and change the crankcase oil).

Any other suggestions?

Yes, or even if it turns over with the starter.

Pray. :)

G'day I would be getting your starter checked out it is possible for a starter to free spin or spin under a light load (inj out) but not turn over with compression
