Hi all,
I have read some posts, some where, concerning replacing head fixings and how costly they are, which I agree even if you are luckly enough to be able to get them.
Also in a perkins manual I have read about a problem of the older engines "popping" the threads in the block and the manual giving a solution for this.
It says to tap the thread in the block to a depth of 1 inch, making sure that the new fixings go in all the way.

Well it is very difficult to find the longer fixings, even if you ignor the cost. Which ment I had 2 engines with no fixings.
I have also read many posts reguarding the manufacture of fixings (to do or not to do) and the discussion of material to be used.
Well I live in the jungle where we have nothing, or very little, so my solution was to make them, using M12 socket head screws, (long enough to cut off the thread) turned them down to 11mm and screw cut new threads, finishing off with a die (HHS). This means I have head fixings made from 12.9 grade material.

Now I am about to fit the new fixings and I will torque them down to 70 Lbs ft
Will let you know.
