Hello members of Tractorbynet.

I've been reading a lot of your messages on buying a new compact tractor. Well, I'm in the same boat here. What should I do?

Looking closely at the Kubota l2800, and recovering from John Deere price shock..I stumbled across the Massey 1500 series and found them to be a good buy for the money; However, I'm stuck on one issue. I cannot decide if I should get the 1529 or the 1532 it痴 about a 4k more for the 1532. Will I miss\need the extra horse power?

I have 80 acres in Northern Minnesota that needs some work. I will be clearing trees to make a driveway to the cabin, and need to clean up behind the loggers that cleared the value timber about 10 years ago, and start working on food plots and other similar tasks. Will the 1529 be enough to do the job or will I be kicking myself for not getting the 1532?

I have been talking to the local Massey dealer; he recommends the 1529 with the factory joystick, L100 loader for $17,950.00 before tax. He's asking 4k more for roughly 5 more HP. Is it worth the money? This will be a life time purchase and I don't want to be disappointed.

Massey4me,

I was going through the same dilemna as you are back in late summer of '08, and trying to choose between the 1529 and 1532.

After looking at these at the dealer, and comparing the difference in frame size of the 1533, I went with the 1533 instead of either of the other two...more money, of course, but it's been worth it (IMO).

I haven't found that I've needed the extra HP, but I've entertained the thought that maybe I should have gone with the 1547! :D

Happy shopping!

Buy the most HP for frame size; you then can't say you shoud have got the extra horses. Maybe dealer will come down a little on the 32.

I'm with bbowman, go with the power. At least a 1533 and hard serious price debate. I found out last week that big ticket items that were firm in price and now easy to dicker on. I guess maby there is something to this recession talk , although you would never guess it if you went out to eat . the wait at all the good restruants is 1/2 to 1 hour.
Show the dealer your cash and tell him you want the 1533 for 17500 with loader. I think it's a good place to start. Good luck

RE: the issue of Max HP / Frame size, suggest trying to get more feedback from actual users. With the smaller lighter frame on the 1529 / 32 you may run out of traction before you use all the horsepower, especially on the 32.

With 80 acres, with what you plan and no doubt what will come up, I'd second the idea to seriously consider the larger frame 1533 series. It will be a lot easier to go larger now than to trade if you find the capacities of the smaller frame won't do the job.

The price on the 1532 seems high. I priced an agco ST34A at the agco dealer for $20,600 it is the same as the Massey 1533. Only thing I don't know is what tranny you are looking at. This one had the 12x12 powershuttle and included a loader.

One thing to consider, if you need it, is loader capacity.

1529 & 1532 Tractor use the L100 Loader with 1282# Lift Cap. and 1401# breakout force

1533 & 1540 Tractor use the 1525 Loader with 1900# Lift Cap. and 1841# breakout force

1547, 1552 & 1560 Tractor use the 1530 Loader with 2527# Lift Cap. and 2307 breakout force

Note that if you go with a 1547 you get the same loader as on the next two bigger tractors. I didn't visually compare the L100 loader with the 1525, but I did see a 1533 w/1525 loader parked beside a 1547 w/1530 loader, and the size difference was significant, at least to me. Of course each step up is more money, and if you don't need it... I am only pointing this out because of bbowman's second thoughts. And I realize your question is "1529 or 1532", IMHO (probably worth about 2 cents), based on what you describe you will be doing, sounds like you need the 1547. Not so much for HP, but for the weight. (Weight = traction)

I was quoted $20,800 for 1533 with loader. $27,650 with cab and loader. Best I remember, both were Hydrostatic. My notes don't say which transmission.

Thank you to everyone for your very good pricing model selection information. The message is clear, I’m paying too much for the 1529 and if I buy the 1532 that price would be what I should be paying for the larger 1533.
I’m going back to the dealer this week. I’ll be back here with an update shortly
