Are you using Permatran or Amsoil in the hydro?? Which Amsoil?
I put Amsoil ATH (5W-30 Hydraulic oil) in my HST, and can't be happier with the performance. No difference warm, but almost zero warm-up required on those bitter cold snowblowing days that are now a bad memory. Running Amsoil SVG (75W-90) gear oil in the front end.

The number below actually indicates hours per gallon, not MPG.

Same here, I'm running ATH, 5W-30, Synthetic Tractor Hydraulic/Transmission Fluid, in the M-F Tractor Hydrostatic Drive and front Axle and have been very happy with it's performance especially in very cold weather.

How has the hydro whine been compared to Permatran?

I used the Amsoil (AGL) 80W-90 gear lube because of the EP designation, in the front.

I have been using (ATH) in the transmission for 3 years. I still give the tractor a while to warm up. But, I feel better about it when I have to hurry and use it cold. I have noticed no performance difference vs the Permatran.
