break in period on new engine

Hi Guys
A friend of mine just bought a MF 230 that had just had new engine put in here are the facts as he bought it today.

Super nice orig tractor. Just installed new 3 cyl Perkins Eng. Brand New-Not rebuilt Original owner left oil plug loose.

My question is there anything special you need to do for break period in for the tractor if he is brush hogging in rather thick stuff with a 5 ft brush hog? What is the first service time? RPM limitiations, ETC? Also where is cheapest place to buy owners manual. I already found him a place for IT manual.

The harder he works it for the first 100hrs the better it will be. Thats also when i would do the first service. :thumbsup:

Agreed.. Keep the RPM in the mid to upper range, avoid lugging, and work it as much as possible..

Vary the RPMs a bit when breaking it in. For example do not hook it up to a generator and run it for hours at the exact same RPMs.

That is a very timely question. I just received my Perkins engine manual that includes the 1004-T, a four cylinder turbocharged engine, the 3 cyl non turbo version is in the manual too. Perkins says to break-in the engine as follows.

1] Do not operate the engine at high speed without a load.

2] Do not over load the engine.

A gradual running-in of a new engine is not necessary. Prolonged operation at light loading during early life of the engine can cause lubricating oil to enter the exhaust system. Maximum load can be applied to a new engine as soon as the engine is put into service and the coolant temperature has reached a minimum of 60 C or 140F. The engine will benefit if the load is applied as soon as possible after the engine is put into service.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, LUG the engine. If you find the engine lugging, switch to a lower gear and keep the revs up.

Me] vary the load and engine speed for the first 20 hours.

Lubricating Oil Specifications:

Page 5.03 has a chart showing SAE viscosity oils for the ambient temperature meeting API CC/SE or higher.
15W40 is popular, a 5 or 10 W 40 may also be used.

You say that the original owner left the oil plug lose. Did he run the engine dry, without oil? If so you may have bearing damage, fuel pump damage, rocker arm damage and much, much more. I would follow Perkins instructions and see what happens. But it dose not sound good, good luck.
