First off, anyone thinking about buying a MF 231 should check out the parts availability for this tractor. The on-line sources rarely show a 231 application. The parts list just jumps right over the 231. And if you aren't knowledgeable, like me, you don't know if a part for a 240 or 230 would work on a 231. So that's frustrating. I like the tractor, I just wish it had some parts support. But that's what you get for buying a Polish built tractor, I guess.

Anyway, enough of that rant. I can buy Clymers shop manuals, and a lot of others, for the 230, 240, etc. but, of course, not for the 231. Does anyone know if for general stuff if one of these manuals would be close enough for general work? I'm getting ready, depending on parts, to try to do an in frame rebuild and while I have a downloaded Perkins 3-152 engine manual I don't have a shop manual for the tractor itself. It's probably pretty self-evident how the gas tank, radiator, etc. comes off but I'd just feel better taking a look at a manual that was at least for a similar tractor.

Any guidance would be helpful. But I don't want to buy a $100 shop manual if I can help it.

Did you check AGCO for manuals?? Manuals are readily available. Look here...

Also, MF should still support that tractor, as it is a bare bones simple utility tractor. Nothing wrong with where it is built either.

This will be the best money that you will ever spend, especially if you plan on keeping it. The aftermarket manuals are good for leveling a workbench off, not too much else.

Still supported, just checked agcopartsbooks.com

Do you have a GOOD dealer nearby?

Yup, that was a pretty good tractor. If you don't want to spend the money for a good manual, don't buy any manual. The factory manual is the best you're going to get. Anything else is just a waste of money.

That tractor is still pretty new as far as tractors go. Aftermarket parts would still be a way out. But, that means you should be able to walk into any decent AGCO dealer and get your parts.

Thanks. It's the aftermarket lack of parts. The dealer is 70 mikes away. If that is a downloadable service manual, for $40 or so that's OK, but it looks like its going to be a $100. I suppose its worth to keep the thing running and maintained properly.

The 231 was built in a different factory (Poland) than the 230/240 (England) therefore while there are similarities, different components from a different manufacturer were used in each tractor eventhough the brand name MF is the same, thats where it ends. So, suggest you visit a good MF dealer for the proper manual.
