Massey Ferguson 245 Diesel
Tractor - Massey 245 diesel quit running, act like it is out of fuel, Used hand pump to prime and it started. It ran for a few minutes and quit. Acts like it is out of fuel. Tank is full of fuel. Installed new water fuel separator with fuel in the filter.
Hand pump on fuel pump was used to pump fuel into fuel lines. The tractor still will not start.
The tractor will start when using gasoline on a rag and hold over air intake but will not continue to run when the gasoline rag is removed.

Has anyone had this problem? My next step will be to remove the fuel pump and check to see if the diaphrahm is split.

Maybe the injectot pump is air locked. Did you open the bleeder screw on the injector pump yet?

you will also want to check the screen in the lift pump (transfer pump) as that is the primary filter.

Some thing was restricting your fuel flow. It could be the strainer in the tank bottom or a clogged water separator or a clogged fuel filter. You pulled the water separator AND the engine quit running like it was out of fuel so you need to bleed the entire fuel system, starting at the water separator then the filter then the pump and finally the injector lines.

First, pull the line that runs between the tank and the first filtration unit andmake sure that you have fuel running from it when you open the tank valve. If you don't the strainer is clogged. If that checks out OK, then bleed the system.

If filter is NAPA 3166 make sure filter outer groove is not blocked with O ring at top of filter, this is inlet to filter, center tube is filter outlet. Top is sealed with O ring in base groove, have made service calls to find extra O ring blocking off inlet groove. Also check bleed line oriface fitting on top of filter base, should have a small line back to tank or injector return. When .020 bleed fitting gets plugged air can't get out of filter and goes to injection pump instead, will be hard to keep air out of pump, will run erratic, even die.
