Oil & Fuel Hard to get to Oil Filter on 1526 Massey Ferguson

Not for sure but you are probably right. I think the 1523 has the same motor as well. 91 CI?

It had the same engine as the GC, 68.5 ci. Looking at the pic, layout looks the same. Cannot get a strap wrench on it. Had to use end cap. Can use a strap on the 1635 though.

Ok, My 1215 had the same 91 Ci motor in it but was only 17 HP. It really was a good tractor and served me for 14 years. I do like the 1526. I have had it since March and only one problem to speak of. I will have to find a end cap wrench and see if it works OK because sooner or later I'll have a hard time getting that critter off. It has that bracket in front for the side panel as well.

So does anybody else have an oil filter that looks like this on their Massey? I have to change the oil for the second time tomorrow. I had a heck of a time getting the filter off the first time. The only tool I had that would fit in this little place was my hand. I have a few oil filter wrenches but you can not use them because of the Hydraulic line in front of the filter. You would think an engineer would figure this out right away and not produce this stuff like this. Hopefully I do not have problems taking it off tomorrow as I only turn them 1/2 turn by hand once they are seated.

I use a Craftsman Auto Adjustable Universal Oil Filter Wrench (part number 28-205230) on an hard to access oil filter on our '08 Subaru Forester. (Another dumb design. They went to this after havinga oil filter that was accessable and you could change it out in 5 minutes with no problem to one where you have to reach through a donut hole in the hot exhaust manifold after removing a plastic rock shield. DUMB, Dumb Dumb!)You use a 3/8" x 6" or longer extension and a rachet with this device.

Thank you. I will look into that. I have a claw wrench similar to that, but it only works for removal.

Most auto parts have end cap oil filter wrenches where you use a socket ratchet to loosen the filter. Since filters are different diameters, measure yours and how many facets it has then go shopping. Service centers use an end cap type filter remover. Along time ago I used two phillips screwdriver and drove them into the filter at an angle to twist the filter loose. I now have one of those fancy self adjusting end cap wrenches that will work on any faceted top filter.

I could not use a strap wrench either. Radrock yours looks very close to my tractor.

Here are a few more pictures, One from further away. As you can see, it is a very little filter. I changed the oil, filters, transmission/Hydrostat oil, filter and cleaned the strainer. It was a pretty nice day out today to get it done. Now I am ready for winter.

The oil filter came off by hand with no problem. I loosed it up last night while it was cold. I will have to check and try to find a cap wrench, just in case it is too tight next time. It will even be hard to use one of them. mguitas, I would say your tractor is pretty close to mine. WilliamBros had a 1523 and said it looked like his too. I used a tape measure to give you an idea how close everything is around it.

Everyone have a great week!!

Yupp, that is as tight as our 1523 was. Did you keep the filter? Take it with you to try out an end cap wrench. Do you have a swivel extension? Get one of those too, it will make your life easier.

Thanks for the pics. What did you run for oil?

1635 filters...

First oil change, we cut the tie strap, and adjusted the wiring in front of the filters. I can slip a band wrench between the wires and filter with no problems. Would be kinda awkward if we had a loader though.

And here is the 1523...

It was a tough one, had to use the end cap. Had a hard enough time wiping the filter head off before installing a new filter.

What part number is your filter?? 72201898? That is the filter for the 1523.

Just an Update...

A KD 3253 end cap wrench fil the Luber Finer Filter #LFP8176. I can't remember if it fit the MF filter, but it does fit the luber finer, and the AC filter on my Sportsman. Guessing it will fit though.

Thanks for the pictures. I will get another oil filter and take it with me to make sure it matches. The motor looks just the same. If you click on my pictures it will make them bigger. Dont know why yours show up bigger on the computer. One difference is that your Hydraulic line curves below the filter where mine cuts right in front of it. That line is the biggest problem. But it wasn't that bad. Thanks for the info on the wrenches. I will check it out later.

I upload all of my pics in top quality and the original size (largest, not resized.) to my photobucket account, then copy the image link and past it with the text.

I think the end cap will be the best bet, and with a short swivel extension, you can spin it right off with no problems.
