Hi I've got a mf 88 with loader and want
To change the fluid. Originally it calls
For automatic trans fluid type A. The fluid in
This model operates the tranny, hydraulics,
And power steering all from the same
Reservoir. I've read that some people
Substitute this ATF with hydraulic fluid?
Does anyone know if this is suitable
Or is ATF better? Thanks

Yes it will work. try tsc and compare specs

Autozon, Napa, PepBoys and many others carry type A fluid. It is common for MF's to use a central reservoir for everything. Although when draining there are more than one plugs because of compartmentalization. Because of rubber seals, I'd go back with what is specified.

The 88 also has a wet disc clutch pack to drive the pto, hyd fluid may not be acceptable for that application but a tractor trans fluid suitable for wet brakes would be if you are set on changing fluid type.

Going to change fluid is that in cold temps
The hydraulics are real slow and is very
Difficult to start. Currently there is
Hydraulic fluid in it and is how I bought
It. I'm going to buy ATF fluid dextron 3
Or type A which is specified and hope it
Helps. Thanks. Also would a weak ignition
Coil create hard starting in cold temps?

Stick with a type A or compatiable.

When you drain it and it kind of looks like brown coffee, then water is getting into the fluid. Check your shift lever boots which might need replacing. That's the most common problem. I little bit of water doesn't effect it much, but alot of water really thickens the fluid and the pump begins to struggle thus slowing things down.

Weak ignition may be an indication you need to replace the capacitor next to your points. Check you plug tips for any darkening around the the brass clips that push into the spart plug wires. Your coil could be getting weak. Check for pitting on the points. Check your plugs to see if they're nice and whitish color and not crusted over. You should have a nice fat blue spark when checking it against a ground. A weak spark will hamper starting especially when it's cold.

Ok thanks alot for the info and yes the fluid
Does look light brown in color so I
Guess water has got in. The tractor sat for
10yrs outdoors before I bought it.
Thanks again for the help The plugs
Look pretty black and crusty and I replaced
Them a month ago so prob weak spark
There is a new condensor in too but
Looks like the original coil

Your tractor has the 242 continental gas engine? Ours would start on the coldest winter days, in half a turn. Black plugs can be caused by a rich fuel mixture, weak spark , or the engine burning oil. its hard to tell you whats wrong over the internet but it May be worth looking at the carb since it has sat so long.
Its been a while but i recall at the time that we could not buy the correct sparkplug L21? And could only find L16 a much colder plug, if you decide to adjust the carb screws the low speed adjustment is actually an air bleed screw turn in to rich turn out to lean mixture, opposite of the norm.

Yes it is the gas engine and I have
Rebuilt the carb but will maybe take a

So I changed the fluid with type a ATF
And cleaned the filter in there and
Everything works great now even got
It running a lot better after locating a
Clog in the fuel line. Thanks again. Does
Anyone know of a tire additive to add
To the rear tire go stop slow leaks. I know
Of the product slime but anything else
Out there that could work probably need
Lots for such a big tire?
