Default Clutch reach on 1428

I test drove a 1428 last week (gear trans), and the only concern that I had was that it seemed that the clutch was quite a reach to engage. I'm no slouch at 6'1", but that was one thing that stuck out to me. None of the other tractors that we have seem to have the same "problem."

At this point, I am wondering if that thought was just in my head or not. Has anyone else encountered the same, or am I just going mad??

Before I put down the money for it, I will most definitely drive it again, but I just wanted to hear what others here have to say.

I have to assume that it was since I didn't make any adjustments to it. Actually, one of the questions that I wrote down to ask the dealer next time I talked with him was if the seat was adjustable or not. Can I safely assume by your question that the seat is adjustable on the 1428?

I will say that as far as the ergonomics of everything else, it all seemed to be in the perfect location and reach, and I was very pleased with the overall feel of the tractor.

When I first got my 1428 I had the same problem. The seat on my tractor has three slots to adjust the seat, I moved mine to the forward position and have good since. I will mention the process of adjusting the seat is not a simple proceedure. I had to unbolt the seat frame to allow enough room for the pin to be removed(it runs right into the fender so it cannot be completely removed without unbolting the seat). It was a one time adjustment and has solved my problem.

I've had the same problem. Could'nt reach the clutch and had to slide down in front of the seat to be able to reach it. The problem went away when I got a couple of years older and grew a little.

Skitch,

Yep same problem. The seat adjustment took care of it. The Massey dealer also said if I needed more he could adjust the pedal a little as well.

Egon,

Many years ago (before I grew a little), dad would strap a wood block to the pedals. Guess he was just tired of doing all the work himself.

Thanks for the input on this. I will be going back to the dealer this weekend, and I will certainly give it another go with the seat adjusted.

The mounting brackets can also be moved ahead, there are two sets of holes for the hinge brackets, along with the three on the seat.
