Hi all. I am about to buy a box blade for my B21 and wanted to see what everyone's experience says about size. My dealer seems to feel a 5.5' or 6' would be fine. I thought a 5' behind a 21 hp tractor would be about max. Sure like to hear what you box blade users think.

Thanks
Mark

Hi, there've been some recent discussions on the subject that should be in the old site archives. I bought a 6' box scrapper for my 24PTO HP tractor, which is below recommended HP for the scrapper. The reason is that my turf tire tracks a slightly wider than 5.'

You can't grade very well if you have to put tires on the edge of the last pass. In going for the wider scrapper, I know I'll have to take smaller bites and probably increase traction by picking up a loader bucket of dirt. Despite manufacture recommendations, a tractor operator does have quite a bit of control over how much power an implement takes. Smaller bites and running slower reduces how much power an implement takes. Of course, everything is within reason, I wouldn't try to pull a cat 3 implement with my tractor, but I also would have bought a 5' scrapper if I had narrower tire tracts.

TomG is right on; get one that's just a little bit wider than the outer edges of your rear tire tread or you'll never be happy with it. I use a 5' because my rear tread is about 54".

I agree with the other posts, too. Too big can be a little aggravating sometimes, but too small is a killer. You can always make a couple passes to deal with a box scraper that's too big by not letting it dig too deep. But if it's not wide enough to cover your tracks, no matter how many passes you make, in some situations, you can't get the job done.

TomG, Bird & Mark, Thanks for the input. Sounds like we are all thinking same way. The smallest box blade that will cover rear tread width, is the way to go. In my case the B21 is 54" with R4's so a 5' blade is what I will go with. Thanks again.

Get a 5 footer, It will cover your tracks and give you more room to pull more material.

Spot on advice given by everyone! I'm very glad I went with the 5 footer instead of the 4 footer or 54 incher. Get the the 5 footer and take whatever size bites work for you and your machine. :p

Get the 5.... I'm sure he already has one since this thread is from 04-11-2000, 07:19 AM.

Ya I am a little slow but it did take less than 9 years to get the boxblade. Oh and the 5' box was the right size. :D

Unfortunately sometimes it will be too wide, other times it will be too small.

Wide is great for gravel in driveways, but heavier cuts in dirt can easily load up a tractor.

There is no easy answer other than to base the width on what it will mostly be used for.
