I am just doing my first 50 hour fluid change. The dealer is also New Holland. I wanted to replace the fluids with the same products they use. When I asked about the front transfer case 4WD they said that they would use New Holland Hydro fluid #134. I can tell by the smell/look of the old fluid that it had gear oil in it befor. The parts guy tells me that the NH #134 is better because when it gets cold it is more fluid. I'm not that comfortable with changing to the Hydro fluid. What do you guys think ?

I wouldn't put hydro fluid in the front transfer if its supposed to have either a 80 or 90 wt. gear oil.
The reason for gear oil is its sticky and holds to the gears better than a hydro fluid would.
Ask that parts guy if he works off a bonus system because he sure isn't looking out for your investment he must be looking out for his. Good luck

ccw, I don't know which tractor you have, but what your dealer told you doesn't surprise me. You said "front transfer case" and I guess you're talking about the front axle. My B2710 manual says to use UDT, Super UDT, or 85w-90 gear oil. That's still puzzling to me since they're so different, but when I changed it, I put the gear oil in it, although it appeared to have the UDT in it orginally.

ccw - you don't say what type of tractor you have, but for my Kubota B1700 the first scheduled change for the front drive is at 200 hours, so you may not want to change it at 50. My book says, believe it or not, to use "Either kubota super UDT (which is 5 weight in the cold) or 80W90 gear oil"...figure that one out!

Damn it Bird, we have to stop answering the same questions at the same time with the same responses. Isn't Texas an hour behind New York?

A'm I missing something here---hydro fluid and gear oil are way way way different aren't they? If I am wrong on this please fill me in with the correct info. Thanks

Well, I'm a little late - you have to get an early start and stay up late to get ahead of Bird and PaulB.

The manual for a number of the Kubotas does say that either UDT or gear oil will work fine in the front axle. We've pondered over this on the old board several times without any real conclusions. Personally, I wouldn't use anything but gear oil in mine.

CCW,
My NH TC18 operator's manual says to check the front differential fluid at 50 hours and if low to add NH #134 Hydraulic Oil. Says to change it at 300 hours. I'll be following my manual for warranty purposes and all /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. There is no differentiation for different fluids in different climates. JimBinMI

Gordon,
New Holland operator's manual for my TC18 calls for the NH #134 hydraulic oil in my front differential. I'll be using it to top off and when I change it. Does seem funny you can use two seemingly totally different fluids in the same place though. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif JimBinMI
