FIAT 80 series engine pre heaters...

Perhaps try actually reading my post this time. Just barely enabling an engine to start is not the only objective. Reducing wear and smoke is the main one for me, and for anyone not wanting to wear their engine out prematurely. Nor does a block or coolant heater take anywhere as long to work…

FIAT 80 series engine pre heaters...

Finally received my new heater from eBay. 3KW this time. Still made in China (I think) and still covered in Russian writing. But a different design so here's hoping this one doesn't leak internally and short out like the last 2... Its an easier install as no elbow hose was required and its...

FIAT 80 series engine pre heaters...

Update. I don’t recommend that type of heater. The idea is fine and my installation worked well. However the heater failed after a year or so with little use. It starting popping my barns circuit breaker whenever I plugged it in. So I removed and disassembled the heater, finding water in the...

FIAT 80 series engine pre heaters...

So onto mounting the unit itself... The easiest place I could spot, was under the alternator where there are several M8 x 1.0 (fine) tapped holes. So I made a small steel bracket, slotted for a heavy duty zip tie (fast access), painted it and added some self adhesive 10mm high density sponge...

FIAT 80 series engine pre heaters...

So that done on to the bottom hose pipe. As the pipe is mostly 36mm steel tube its not hard to simply buy a 1/2 BSP pipe nipple, cut to length, drill the hole and MIG it in place. Add the required elbow and 5/8" (16mm) pipe barb and we have the bottom hose (inlet for the pump heater).

FIAT 80 series engine pre heaters...

Installation. OK, first things first, whilst you can simply cut a bit out of the heater hose and slip the unit in, that's not ideal. These little pumped heaters effectively function as a siphon, so they work best if you feed in water from as low as possible in your cooling system (bottom hose...

FIAT 80 series engine pre heaters...

So whilst it doesn't get super cold down here in Victoria, Australia, it still gets cold in the winter. We are at about 1,200 feet above sea level and regularly get frosts in the winter, with months where the daily highs are below +10 Celsius. So this got me thinking about fitting a block...

FIAT cabin tractors - Heating system

Anyone here have a FIAT tractor with a cab on it? They are quite a common option, and I've seen all the 80 series and later with them. Lots of them in Europe and quite a few sold in the USA under FIAT or Heston from the mid 1970's to late 1980's. If so I wanted to ask a question about the cabin...

CAV DPA injector pump - no fuel to injectors after bleeding

Any diesel gurus here? My FIAT 780 is having some post maintenance issues with its CAV DPA injector pump. Hoping someone here can help. The tractor was starting, running and stopping fine. Always ran like a clock. It has an IVECO diesel with a CAV DPA type 3342 injector pump. But recently there...

FIAT lift spool valve rebuild anyone?

Well I found the answer. The depiction of one of the lift control linkage arms in both the factory parts and service manual was wrong! The rear RH linkage arm that inputs lift link (arm) position to the draft linkage (depicted as # 9 - upper inner lever), was shown as being above...

FIAT lift spool valve rebuild anyone?

Hi, My FIAT 780 has a lift problem! It had a fairly constant leak past the LHS lift arm bush, so I stripped and rebuilt the lift unit with new brass bushes and seals both sides. Added a new piston and O rings / Nylon seals etc for good measure whilst I had it apart. Great you'd think, should be...

    FIAT lift unit oil leak

Not a 640 guy so no I cannot tell you from memory, but there are plenty of places selling FIAT parts and the 640 was common in its day. A google search will likely find one handy for you to use. Every FIAT seal I have seen so far has been a standard metric size, available through my local seal...

FIAT 780 Parts Manual in PD now available

I've had a few people ask me if I will ever get around to making a PDF version of the old FIAT 780 Parts Manual. Well I finally did. Mine was not worthy of scanning but after many months I found a very clean factory parts manual here in Australia. Its in Italian, French, German, Spanish and...

    FIAT lift unit oil leak

Have a problem with my FIAT 780 leaking oil past the LHS lift arm seal. :( It had this problem when I bought it years ago. So when I restored it I replaced both lift arm seals, along with the lift unit piston seals / rings, and that reduced it somewhat but its got bad again. Usually it just...

OEM stabilizers - installation on FIAT 780.

OK well I solved this one myself. The later 780's all had the axle housings drilled and tapped for M16 fine bolts for the OEM stabiliser anchor brackets. Upon examination at a FIAT wrecker I found the threads are around 40 mm deep and set into a greatly thickened casting around that area. It...
