Type of fluid for the transmission for M21D?

What type of fluid does the transmission take in a M21D? It was that watery when we drained it, I can't tell if it's gear oil/transmission fluid or hydraulic fliud.TIA

While some manuals call for gear oil, all tractors that have hydraulic FEL's need to use universal hydraulic fluid.
Either way universal fluid is easier on the system in colder climates and lubes just as well.

Rice paddy countries never get that cold so gear oil stays fluid but in our climates it would be much too thick and really tax the system.
Also universal is cheaper and you do need to buy in gals and not pts.
Probably your gear case holds as much as 2.5 gals of oil.

That is why there is so much fluid in there.
