I have a sato beaver that will start and run great as long as it is pulled to get it started but will not start under the power of it's own starter, it just turns over but never starts. I had the starter rebuilt thinking the starter was dragging but that did not solve the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm just at a dead end here

Does it start up easily and quickly when towed?

Check/replace the battery cables and their connections. On a 30-ish year old machine, there's going to be corrosion there. Clean it all up well. Charge/top off the battery, or replace it if needed.

Check that the glow plugs all work, too. Make sure to give them some preheat time to work and do their job.

I have a Satoh ST1440 that is similar to a Beaver, and it doesn't like to start unless attached to a battery booster to spin it more quickly or it is hot outside; 2 of the glowplugs are weak or non-functional though. I imagine fixing those malfunctioning plugs would fix my issue at a stroke, I just haven't gotten around to it.

Might want to check your compression- as long as it's not cold outside it should fire right up without glow plugs. If it has weak compression it won't want to take off without some extra spinning. If you have some hours on her that might be time for a rebuild/re-ring.

No improvement I cleaned the cables and got a new battery, when it's pulled to start it runs like a champ, I put a charger on it with a starter boost that didn't do it either, and it's not cold in Texas so glow plugs should not affect that I don't think.

you got a poser here. i have a few questions .
1. does it turn over relatively fast with the starter?
2. how do you stop a beaver engine? eg. do you turn the key or push a lever?.
3. does it charge when it is started?
4. has it ever been started with the starter?

It may not need the glow plugs normally, but obviously something, maybe several things, are amiss. It may be that the compression is a little low, letting it run ok but not start normally. Glowplugs may give enough heat to the cylinders to let it fire, if they aren't working now.

My grandfather had this tractor, I kinda inherited it when he died in April. It has been setting for roughly 10yrs and I don't much about it, that I can tell the glow plugs are not working at this time, and yes when you put a charger on it does spin faster it even acts like it wants to start but does not. I know nothing about diesel engines.

old diesels do not start like cars. it takes a lot of cranking. for example if a car or gas enging starts in 3 seconds the diesel would take 6 or more seconds to start. u tube starting diesels you may pick up some pointers there.
for starters you have to get the glow plugs to work.this will make starting easier. you can also install a block heater to the engine. the block heater will help a lot. the block heater is installed by removing a frost plug on the engine block and fitting the correct size frost plug heater there. this heater when plugged in will warm the antifreeze and make the whole engine warm to the touch in about half hour.then you just heat up the glow plugs and crank until it starts up.

once you get it started let it run until you get all the jobs for it done.dont use it like a gas engine let it stay running rather than start /stop frequently.click on the 2 u tube links.

Even after towing to get it started and it's warmed up it still will not start under it's own power from the starter, I'll check out the links thnx

with the engine warm you would think the starter should start the tractor.is the starter spinning in the right direction? is the compression within the specs? hope you find the problem.
