We have the universal quick attach on the loader of our 5740. I have very limited experience with the quick attaches. I just built a version of a tree scoop that I found on tbn. I was in a rush and used a pre built attach plate. All the dimensions are the same as how the bucket attaches. My question is, while trying to shake the mud out of the bucket( it is probably overly wet for doing this right now, but time is always short in supply), twice the quick attach levers released and the bucket fell off. I notice that the pins are tapered where they go thru the mount and I see the mount is angled as well. Is this so you don't have to lock them open to get the implement on and you hook the top and give it a shake and pops on? How do most people work this feature? Secondly is the spring loaded feature of the quick attach levers a safety release so the mount of the implement can "break off" before any damage is caused? It looks to me more like the second situation and I should just be mindful when swinging/shaking a long implement like the scoop.

Thanks
Brent

Hi Tul01,

First congratulations on a fine looking job! To answer your guestions, first the wedge of the pin should be facing toward the loader. The pin is under extream spring pressure forcing it into the pocket of the attachment. This assures a constant force holding the attachment to the quick change plate. As the wedge enters the pocket it can accomodate at little bit of misalignment of the pocket because of the wedge shape. The purpose of the spring is to take up the difference in pocket shapes. This way it can take up the slack of different manufactures. Now the spring should be quite compressed when the locking handle is closed in the cammed over position. Keep the implement a few inches off the ground while locking the levers down. I even have to use my foot sometimes to completely lock the handle down. It will give a most definate snap when it locks into place. It is not a safety idea to come undone in any situation. When cammed over it should be quite difficult to pull up and release the pins and the handles should be straight up to drop off and reattach the next implement. Because the wedge shape of the pin faces the tractor you could not pick up an attachment and just shake the loader. The round side of the pin would just bash the attachment and get nowhere. It just sounds to me that you have not locked the pins in the cammed over position. If you indeed have have locked them, the pocket needs to be built up with weld on the wedge side of the pocket. You could expearment with shim stock between the pin and pocket until you get a most definate snap of the locking pin. Then you know how much to build up the surface with weld. I sure hope this helps you. You certainly never want to lose any attachment while in use. This could present a very dangerous situation!

Thanks Jim I hadn't looked at the safety issue of it that way, I guess I felt safe enough because I was in the cab and luckily none of my "helpers" were out in the rain! If it stops raining tomorrow I will have a much closer look at the situation and check both quick attachs.

Nice job on the tree scoop. Is that MrJimi's design? Nice looking tractor also.
