My friend picked up a 4-cyl diesel tractor that reads 901 on the hood. The trans is 4-speed and it's red and gray but looks to have been painted a few times. It has 13.6x28 rear tires and a standard wide front end. The numbers near the battery tray are eroded and may not be able to be read.

A few questions. If it is a 901 series and has a standard wide front end what about it would be different from an 801 series? Should there be something different about how the front axle mounts up to the engine? It doesn't seem to sit any higher than a standard utility. If the numbers by the trans are not readable what could tell us if the tractor was pieced together with salvage parts from 800/801's or even 600/601's?

Also, did Ford discontinue the 5-speed trans option after the Selecto-Speed came out? It seems like I only see the 5-speeds on the older 00 series.

first off if its a 901 the front end will be totaly different than a 801 also the rear end will have bull gears on a 901 and a straight axle on a 801. Also it could be a 801 with 901 side panels

and yes the continued the 5speed when the sos came out but quit them in 1964

The 900 series tractors are "row crop" models. If your tractor is a 900 model, it can be easily identified by the rear axle. It will have final drives that drop the wheels down from the rear axle about 6" by using two extra gears. The 800s have a straight axle, and no final drives. 900s could be tricycle type or wide front, but all 900s sit higher and are considered row crop tractors. A rare high crop version of the 900 was also availible and is higher yet.

It is possible that someone mixed up some parts on your tractor, as many of them are interchangable. However, it is more likley that you have a wide wheeled 901. This is a reallly nice looking tractor too!!!

here's a pic of my 63 4000 which is essentially a updated 941 has the ford wide front end.

last pic shows another of my rowcrops, a 950.. shows you the drop 'bull' axles and the brake hub, while i'm changing a tire.

hope this helps.

ps.. the one you are looking at would be a 941-D-5 if it was a 4spd and wide front from the factory.. post pics if you are unsure.

Wow that is different. I can't remember ever seeing a row crop tractor, but they are different and then they are still the same yea I think I said that right.

I probably shouldn't say this, but....

As a HUGE fan of the 801 series tractors, I just can't come to appreciate these 901 series. They're kinda hard to look at.
