    terrible ain't it..

my newest tractor has had the most expensive problems... I remember when a deluxe hyd remote pack went out on my 2000 7610s.. cost over 700$ in hard parts.. plus some labor and oring kits.. could buy a intact parts tractor for that $ on an older one!

In what year did live PTO become a feature on the majority of the Fords? In other words, if you were looking for one of these tractors today (134/172 cubic inch, pre 3-cyl tractors) would you find that most of them have the live PTO or that most came with the transmission PTO? Is it easier to find one with live PTO or the other way around, or are they about equal? Most of the NAA's, 600's, 2000's I have run into do not seem to have the live PTO, but maybe it's a regional thing.

    in 1955 er.. late 54, the 00 series came out.. 600, 700, 800, 900.

if the middle digit of the model id was a 6, it had a 5spd trans and a dual clutch / live pto.

    thus a 660 860, 960, etc would be a live pto machine.

in the 2000 / 4 cyl models, if it left the factory with a 5spd, it ws a live pto.. 2000's were 63-64 and could have had independent pto with a 10spd powershift trans too ( SOS )

there was a dealer add in aftermarket pinion clutch that could be added to the N and nAA, either lever or hyd, via lever, that clutched the pinion couple tube and gave you pseudo live pto on the n/naa as you could clutch the drivetrain and leave pto running.. just don't stomp the foot clutch.

Hey, thanks for the information. Are the ones with the 6 in the middle digit considered rarer than the ones that are non-live pto?

Do the model numbers work the same for the 601's and also the 800/801's?
Would you say the live pto's are more common in the 800/801's/4000's than in the 134 cu inch engine jobs? Sorry for all the questions, but you seem to have a lot of the answers. Thanks.

all things considered, the live clutch was more money than the plain 4 spd *4* or the non live 5 spd *5* so one could conclude that it is more rare. you see LOTS of *4* machines.

and yes.. the middle digits of 4/5/6 carry thru the 00/01 series. 01 added a few for the sos *71 and *81 as well as other middle digits for machines with special setups.. etc.

even rarer in the early units is power steering..

most of my fords are the non live variety type.. IE.. *4* and *5*, thought I do have a 660 .. no power steering.. but do have an 850 with power steering..

I think you would be happy with the 8n. The machine can be worth more if it has had tie-rods and things replaced on it. Brakes , clutch, paint can be expensive. If the owner has done these things they will have a good idea of the money involved. Some people appear stuborn on price, but if they know what they have invested in their tractor you could understand why. A friend just redid his grandmothers 9n which she had bought well used for 500.00 dollars 45 years ago. It has been used to mow and push snow. He would be ashamed to tell her what the paint cost for the red belly!

Personally, I don't trust tractors or other machinery with "new paint" unless I have proof that it was properly restored inside and out by someone who knows what they are doing because there are too many botched rattle can restorations out there.

Think about it, Joe Blow gets out the pressure washer to clean off the accumulated gunk, then slaps on some "new paint" so he can jack up the price. No thanks.
