I've been trying to decide which of these to buy, you have to be flexible sometimes when you set your sights for a tractor. Is either of these tractors preferable to the other?Dollar for dollar, or pound for pound, which of these units is the preferred one, all things being equal, of course.

thanks

This is from memory but I think the 1720 has a hydraulic oil filter while the 1710 has a hydraulic strainer in the side of the trans case. Also, it's possible one has a single element air filter and one has a dual filter setup.

20 series has hydrostatic steering, 10 series is power assist. 10 series is a straddle mount, 20 series is almost a flat deck. 20 series starts easier with glowplug time. 10 series has many not-so-common parts that are now NLA; 20 series will be there soon.

to add to what rickb said.. the 20 series is just plain newer. the 20 series was also more ergonomic than the 10 which was more economical.

I had a 1920 for a whiloe.. great tractor.. I'd have to call the 1720 a smaller brother..

I have a 1720 and really like it...
Very dependable machine...
Personally I would go with the 20 series over the 10 as for the reasons Rick has stated...
The only thing I have bought in 6 years of use is oil and filters...
Well...
And fuel...lol

I have a ford 1720 with 4 wheel drive this is the best tractor it will do anything I've ever asked of it and more and to top it off its easy to service. Don't know what I would do without it.

I have a 1720 SSS and have put over 2300 hours on it. Easy to get on & off and a gear for most situations.
Very reliable & always starts in any weather.
It has a light footprint and can be driven on lawns without tearing them up.
Oil, filters & grease is all it takes to keep it happy.
I’m never happy and always want more (horsepower) so I installed a turbo and turned it up to possibly 35~40 hp, it was a great tractor; now it's AWESOME!

So....what did the OP wind up with? Either one or neither one?

Love my 1720, but the brakes failed this weekend, so Im down for a few days. Ive replaced starter & alternator, glow plugs, couple of seals...nothing terrible. Runs my 5ft bushog up and down my nasty hills, with no problem, unless the grass is 4ft tall, then I have to downshift sometimes.

I know this was an old thread but I have a 1710 and it runs great! Now with that being said I don't care what kind of tractor I have as long as it works. I'd love to have a 1720, heck I'd love to have 1 of each.
