hey guys im looking at buying a ford 4000 industrail tractor. it has a generic or home made front end loader on it with a 4and a1/2 foot bucket. the controls leak some fluid but rams and hoses are pretty good. it is a gas engine ,and cranks up and runs well ,it does smoke a little, but had been sitting a while. tires are all fair to good, i drove it and it goes forward and reverse fine but shifter jumps out of what ever gear is forward left position runs all day in 2nd or 3rd, the only thing keeping it from being a working tractor is it has bad power steering.,,, before i buy it how expensive can this be? it is just super hard to turn the wheel, 3 point and lift all work pto spins. i will include pics i took she wants $3000.00 but i think i can get it for $2000-$2500 ,any ideas????

you just said that it has 2 major probs.1 the power steering is shot an needs major work.2 it jumps out of gear in certain gears.so that is way to dangerious for you an your kids tobe around if it decides to jump out of gear.you can find a better tractor than that money pitt.even if you could fix it you might be looking at $2000 or more to get it right plus new tires.

Not a homemade loader at all. Looks like a model 730 iirc. Power steering is iffy though. Could be simple, and could be a lot of money. Just depends on the design. Some old fords had separate pumps and resivoirs for the PS. And they didn't hold much. So it could just be low or out.

The trans is iffy too. I had a old ford with the same issue. And it was a busted gear.

All in all, it sounds like a project tractor at the moment. If you aren't ready, walk away. If you want the project...given the potential cost, $1000-$1500 tops imo
