I have an early 80's model 6610 that over the past few weeks has had a steering problem. After a short time of mowing i noticed the steering gets more difficult to turn. The reservoir also becomes very hot after an hour or less. I added trans/hydraulic fluid this morning to the reservoir thinking it was low but i just puked it out after it got heated up.

Anyone experience a similar problem to this? does the main hydraulic filter that is under the right rear tire filter the same fluid that is in the reservoir for the steering? I am going to change the main filter tomorrow to see if it helps but any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

The PS pump has it's own filter inside the reservoir. It's not linked to the hydraulics of the tractor so the filter near the fender has no connection to the steering. The banjo nut on the back of the PS pump comes out and the "can" is removed to expose the filter. The filter will come with new O-rings. Be sure to lube the large tank O-ring before installing the tank.

The steering box also has a reservoir. There's a large plug on the side of the box that's removed and hydraulic fluid injected up to the hole. Hardly anyone ever checks this but it should be fine unless the box has a leak.

When you change the filter and have the power steering reservoir can off, check the relief valve to make sure it isn't loose. It is the large hex bolt looking thing (1") or so that is screwed into the pump body and revealed when the canister comes off. Don't worry much about the oil in the steering box, it is replenished by the pump. In fact, depending on the age of your 6610, it may not have a steering box, but an orbit motor. Change the filter, fill the reservoir, cycle the steering a couple times and refill the reservoir.

WOW! Thanks guys!! I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge on what to do from here!! I had no idea that was actually a filter inside the reservoir but as soon as i can get the filter i will change it!! any ideas on places to buy parts for fords online? Its quite unfortunate but our local dealer has gone out of business within the past few months and im a bit worried about where i am going to be able to buy parts!

For filters, I use Wix. They're available from NAPA auto parts as their "Gold" line. For aftermarket parts I've used EBay, and a slew of parts sellers. It just depends on who had it when I needed it. Nearly all get their parts through Sparex. Walt's Tractor Parts was the latest for some sheet metal. Shipping was down right cheap and fast. ($16 for BOTH hood sections!) And their prices are Very competitive. For hard parts, I go straight to Messick's but they're prices are "Dealer Retail".

Thanks again guys....im going to try and cross some part numbers at NAPA in the morning to see if i can get the right hydraulic filter. anyone have a part number i can double check with them by chance?

I also going to try and see if i can get the inner and outer air fiter.

Do you guys have 6610's? if so how many hours do you have on yours? we have a 4610 and a 6610. the 4610 has around 3k hrs and the 6610 has around 2500 hrs. The 4610 has gone through about 4 injection pumps since new and the 6610 has only needed on. any thoughts?

i think u are getting trash in ur fuel system to have had to put injection pumps on these tractors they still have alot of life left in them the 6610 is just getting broke in i have seen them with 8000+ hours on them and still getting used everyday we have a 6600 ford that had 11000 hours before any major trouble

Below are the Wix part numbers for the 6610. NAPA can cross the numbers to their stock. Normally, it's the same last four numbers.

I've got a 3910 with over 4k hours. When I bought it, it had a new injector pump, alternator, starter, steering box (rotary valve), radiator and a fresh engine rebuild. I've since only put another 300 hours on it with nothing more than filter and fluid changes. Runs like a top. I've been accumulating cosmetic parts to give it the once over--Probably this fall or winter.
