new holland tc40
Tractor has always started until today. Turned key on, waited until glow plug light went out, turned key and heard like a electric crack and then nothing...just hear a light humming sound. Put on a new battery.....only same humming sound....Should I check the fuses or what??........maybe a fuse blew?? Please help so I don't have to have it hauled to a dealer....$150 transport fee..........

I guess I would first check and make sure all the connections to the battery, solenoid and starter are all tight.

Then I would jump across the terminals on the solenoid and see if that gets the starter to spin. BE VERY CAREFUL HERE THO....make sure it is out of gear and there is no way for it to move and or run you over.

The "hum" may...and I repeat "may' mean that that the starter is bound up and trying to turn but will not.

Try the above steps and let us know what happens.

Also, let us know the tractor make & model

and....maybe explain more on the humming sound.

Does it sound like a whirring as if the starter is spinning but not engaging?

Or is it a real hum and nothing is moving?

Oh, and then there is this...

never over look the obvious things.

Make sure your PTO is off...make sure you are in neutral and the clutch is in...check any levers that may have accidentally been moved.

It happens more than you think

If fuse #2 blew when you turned on the key, you will see the PTO lamp illuminated on the instrument panel even though the PTO lever is in off. That's a giveaway that fuse #2 is blown. From your description, it sounds like you have a loose connection at the starter or a loose ground wire where it attaches to the frame (not on the battery end). I'd check both places for tightness and then investigate that hum. Sometimes dirty connections will crackle, but humming/chattering is normally a solenoid trying to engage without enough current.

Since you say your glowplugs are working, the sound you might hear is some hum from that if it is very low. If you have a voltmeter, check the voltage at the starter to ground to be sure you have full battery power. You can jump the power directly to the solenoid at the starter to see if you can force the starter to work. That should work if fuse #2 is blown or not.

By all means, remove the two screws on your instrument panel and check the fuses on the left side below the panel. Fuses are always step #1. Also, you have a main fuse down by the starter (40 amp). I don't think there is anything wrong with that fuse because you said glowplugs work and you can test to see if you have lights. If both/either of those work, there is nothing wrong with the 40 amp fuse.

BTW: The worse case scenario is that you have shear/broken the drivegear going to the flywheel from the starter and the starter motor is spinning but not engaging the flywheel. If you put your tractor in neutral and the parking brake set, you should be able to stand by the starter and reach around and turn the key. That will allow you to better listen to the starter motor to see if it is running but not engaging the flywheel.

Ok, thanks for the helpful suggestions. I will take off the dash plate and look at the fuses. That is where the electric snap sound came from...left side of dash...........

and yes the PTO lamp is lit even thou I checked that the pto lever was not engaged.

If that is the case, I 99.9% guarantee you that fuse #2 is a goner. Put in a 10 amp fuse and buy a self-resetting CB as soon as you can find one.

Here's a link to a place that sells NH starters. The photo of the starter in the ad shows that the starter has one big terminal and another small terminal. If you jumper between the large terminal and the small terminal on your tractor, the starter should engage and turn over the engine even with the key off. I suggest you leave the key off when you try this. This will tell you if your starter and battery are good and the connections are good. If this won't work, you either have a bad battery, dirty connections, or the starter is a goner. At least with the link, you have an inexpensive source of a replacement starter made by Nippondenso.

Hi all. I finally bought a cb for the second fuse replacement. I had to cut down the prongs on the cb I bought to shorter ones to match the cb that was in the tractor. As soon as I replaced the cb fuse it started right up. Now I can get a little more fall plowing done. Thanks to everyone for their help. My local New Holland dealer was useless plus wanting to charge me $150 to have the tractor hauled to his place..and I even bought the tractor from him!!!
