I have a tc 40 new holland and have had no trouble till now......It would not do anything, so We pulled it and it started.....I took the cowling off under and beside the steering column and there was alot of debree in there..cleaned it out..still nothing..sprayed and cleand with electrical spray the components..in there and then it started working......but i had a bracket with 2 bolts our that holds the shaft going down to the tranny for foreward and reverse........i put to misisng bolt in and now it will do nothing again...took the bolts out...still nothing.........i might add that that tractor had alot of snow on it and I put it inside and thawed it out in the beginning.
now I dont know what to do.....anyone have any ideas? thanks

Look you have to be a bit more descriptive of what the problem is if we are to be able to help you. We are not mind readers!

Does the tractor start? If it starts, are you able to make it move? It sounds like you have several problems.

Well, with Easter Basket in hand, I'm going to say that your Neutral Sensing Switch or PTO ON switch is faulty. Of course, it could also be a relay or even a fuse. Fuse #2 will stop you from starting, but it won't be intermittent. It will either be good or bad. You could also have a faulty starter solenoid or dirty battery terminals. Okay, my Easter Basket is full of eggs, so I'll have to let you fill yours.;)

BTW: If you can pull the tractor and start it, the seat switch is okay.

thank u for trying to help......I found out there are 4 safty switches....seat....left side of tranny neutral switch...pto and brake.......I found the problem by using alligator clips and a short wire and by passing each switch..... unhooking and trying to start it again one at a time..the problem was the nuetral safty switch on the left side of the tranny under my left foot..the dealer had not ever sold one and had to order it.........maybe this will help someone else......thanks again

I would be sorely tempted to just solder a jumper across that "safety switch" much like my seat "safety switch" has already been modified. I have an HST model, and it's not like I stand on the pedals when I start it up. NH probably only wants like $50-100 for that switch.

Oklakid98, is your Range Lever really stiff and hard to move? If it is stiff, it might not be centering in Neutral correctly and that could be the reason your switch is intermittent. If that's the reason, your new switch will have the same symptoms. Lots of folks jiggle the range lever while trying to start to ensure the transmission switch is sensing neutral as it should. I think I've only heard of one other person having a neutral sensing switch go bad. It might pay to double check things before you take the plunge and buy another one.

..." much like my seat "safety switch" has already been modified.

Don't get me started. Mines a 2001 so things may have been changed but the first thing to go was the switch under the seat (CHEAP plastic(and it's supose to be a SAFETY switch)). Replaced the switch and the next thing to go was the flimsy tap of metal on the bottom of the seat(I'm on again and off again the seat all day long, at least 40-50/day). Again, this is suppose to be a safety switch yet it's totally under engineered. Yep, mine is bypassed.

Now, back to our regularlly scheduled thread. Sorry about that.

Gald you found the solution!.

So your problem was the starter would not actuate.

Great job diagnosing the problem!

I used to think so. But, my wife and son use the tractor. For me, I hate all those safety switches. When my son is mowing at his grandparents, and grandparents neighbors, I appreciate having those switches.

As a FF/EMT, I have not had to respond to tractor accidents. But I have seen enough pictures.

I'll keep my safety switches for now...
