New Holland TC35D
HI, I was asked to work on a New Holland TC35D @ the farm where my daughter rides horses. The owner told me she had to cut out the plastic around the range selector to get it into 1st. We tried to adjust the linkage but ot didn't work. Now she says it wont come out of first unless she shuts it off. It wont go into 2nd, it just grinds. Any thoughts? She has a new operator, is he using it wrong. Thanks for any help!

I thought all the TC35D's had a HST. What year is this tractor and are you sure it is a TC35D?

Bill, alakodiak is absolutely right. We need to be sure whether we are talking about a gear tractor or HST model. If it's a gear tractor, it probably needs a clutch adjustment. If it is an HST model, it probably needs to have the HST pedals adjusted for neutral. Both adjustments are very different and should not be confused. Find out specifically whether the tractor is gear or HST and we'll be able to help.

The hood says TC35D. Is there another way to tell exactly what I am looking at. thanks guys.

If the hood says TC35D and there are two orange pedals on the right with arrows on them, then it's an HST. Also, it would have a rubber mat on the operator's platform.

If it is an HST, then the range lever has three positions, I-Neutral-II (Lo-N-Hi). The only way the transmission can be grinding is if the HST pedals are not adjusted properly to completely null the HST swashplate. There is an eccentric nut on the right side under the platform that adjusts the pedals for neutral. With the pedals perfectly in neutral, the HST transmission will not be turning and there will be no gear grinding when shifting the range lever. You can actually feather the HST pedals to find the neutral position and accomplish this without adjusting the pedals, but it is harder and the tractor will probably creep instead of stopping when you remove your foot from the pedals.

Jinman, Thanks. you described the machine to a T! I will try to adjust those pedals tonight. I have to adjust the range lever back. The operator tried to adjust that clevis on the linkage before he cut the plastic. Thanks again!

I will try to find the adjustment in the Repair Manual and post it here as an attachment. Check back later and it will be here.

EDIT: Part number 19 in the illustration below is the eccentric nut. You will need to loosen the bolt (item 7) and then adjust the eccentric nut to neutralize the pedals. It should only take a tiny adjustment to fix the problem. I'd adjust it one way a tiny bit and then start the tractor to see if I went the right direction and far enough. Through trial and error, you should get it right. Just PLEASE DO NOT try to adjust this with the tractor running.

First let me say I am not real familiar with this tractor.and Jim is very knowledgeable on boomers. The part that has me confused is the part about cutting away the plastic to get the range selector into 1st. This would lead me to think something in the linkage is bent or broken. It could be from forcing it into gear when the hydro is not returning to neutral.

Bill, BKIFleet posted that someone had attempted to adjust the clevis in the linkage. In the illustration below, item 25 is the range lever. It attaches to a rod, item 23, by an adjustable clevis at the top. If this has been adjusted, it is entirely possible that the lever could be hitting the end of the cutout in the plastic cowling below the rubber knob, item 16. I suspect somebody thought they could adjust the range selector lever and get the tractor to go into gear properly, but they only introduced yet another problem in addition to the HST not being nulled. It is also quite possible that the lever is bent in addition to being mal-adjusted. You just never know. . . .
