Check the battery and connection for corrosion and lose contacts. The fact that starter solenoid makes is some indication of battery not having enough juice to turn the engine. You put the tractor in Neutral with hand brake fully engaged, chocked wheel and then try to jump the starter directly. That will tell you if the starter works or not.

Also check the ground from the battery to the frame. When I had that problem the frame connection was corroded. The ground was a braded strap and showed corrosion in the braides so I replaced the cable.

finally was able to get back to this. i jumped the starter but nothing happened. maybe i didn't jump it properly? i used a screwdriver to short out the 2 screws on the back of the solenoid. one screw attaches to the battery and the other to the starter. i would think that applying 12v to the starter should make it turn.

Don't think that is the correct way to test. You will cause additional problems and expense. Your best bet is just to jump the tractor battery from a good battery (like your vehicle) red to red and the black ground hook to the tractor frame. Then try to start the tractor by sitting in the seat the normal way.

Randy,

if you jump between two big nuts then you have bypassed the solenoid, in this fix if you have battery then starter should turn. If you apply 12 volt to the solenoid terminal then the solenoid should pick up, starter gear and flywheel engages and if the battery has enough juice the starter should engage and spin.
What is the voltage on the battery? what voltage source did you use to jump?

JC,

I kow you said you directly jumped the starter but How about you Neutral safety switch? did you push the clutch all the way to start and then, do you know if the switch below works ?

i get 13v off the battery at the solenoid terminal. the tractor just needs to be out of gear to satisfy the safety switch ( i can normally start the tractor without depressing the clutch). i used the battery to jump. looks like i jumped correctly. i have a battery charger and have tried starting with it hooked up in the high position but that didn't make any difference.

I know this is a little late jumping into this problem but over 90% of starter problems is not the starter but the battery. I always check the battery first because it is also the easiest to check. If you jump or bypass the battery with a good battery you might save yourself from doing the more complicated starter and safety switches tests that JC is showing you. So, have you checked the battery????? :confused2:

Randy,

Like Ray suggested below, I too think it is batter to use an independent source for battery jumping after you test tractor battery. Why don't you use your car?
A battery that show enough voltage might not be able to supply that under the load. One option you have is to take the battery to an automotive store and have them do a "free" load test on the battery. That's is the best way to determine battery condition.

i just tried using the pickup battery and took the tractor battery completely out of the equation. same result. usually when my battery is no good i don't even get the click.
i have a repair manual but they seem to have skipped a starter trouble shoot section.
