Hi,

We bought a 445 about 6 months ago and it has been running pretty well.

But over the weekend it stopped starting, as in it does not turn over. Yes, the battery is fine, has a good charge on it and good voltage. Basically nothing happens when the key is turned. Does the 445 have a neutral safety switch? Or is it the ignition switch? Kind of acts like a neutral safety switch. Any ideas? Any idea of where to get the switch if it has one? Or is it easily bypassed?

Thanks,
Matt

The neutral safety switch shoudld be located on the transmission and it allows current to the solenoid which then directly connects the battery to the starter.

Make sure the battery terminals are "bright" (clean) and tight. make sure that with the key in the STRT position, you have voltage at the the wire from the key through the neutral safety switch to the solenoid. Make sure the battery ground and the starter ground are bright and tight. The starter is usually grounded through it's connection with the block and the battery is grounded to the chasis.

Make sure the battery connection from the solenoid to starter itself is bright and tight. Battery cables can corroded internally and this cannot be readily seen you have to poke around near the terminals to see it.

Electrical problems can be a nuisance to find. Be glad it isn't an intermittent problem. You should get someone to sit in the seat and turn the ignition so you can use a meter or a test light to find where your problem is. Good luck.

Thanks for the tips, but any suggestions on where to get a new switch if I need it?

Yes, that machine has a neutral safety switch it is right in front of the shifter on the shift cover. I'd take the rubber boot off, loosen the screws and put both wires on the same terminal, if it starts then your problem is the neutral switch. You can also check for voltage there too to make sure you are getting power to that point. I would go to your local New Holland dealer or Messicks.com for parts if needed.
