PTO jumping out of gear

Hi, im new to the site, and i think it is great. I bought a used Ford 1310, 1985 model according to the serial number. A week ago while using a finish mower to cut a field, the PTO started to jump out of gear. I have read on the site about the ball, spring, issues. My PTO lever is in a different location though. I would like to know if anyone has seen this set up before. And if so, is there anything, i should know before i take it apart. I have attached some pics to show what i mean.

i'm not up on your model.. but in general.. the first things i would check ar the tracel of the pto engagement lever, and wheter it has positive detents in it. if the lever cannot travel it's full distance and the detents are weak, worn, or non op, that could be an issue.
next is thrust play in the pto shaft.

depending on the mechanism involved and mechanical vs ind pto.. if there is excess thrust play, the pto can walk itself out of engagement.

things like bad bearings.. slipped wear rings..and split rings that pop out , or break, or a damaged bearing carrier are all possibilities.

if the pto shaft has in/out play that is excessive thrust paly.. and it can also eventually mushroom the inner end of the shaft.. and when it walks out of engagement.. it can damage the splines on the shaft and coupler.

sometimes a bearing lets go and you see side-side and in-out play...etc.

the ring grooves the split rings ride in in the bearing carrier can be damaged.. many times this is from a too long of pto shaft.. or one that does not telescop freely.

investigate and post back.

be sure to have a service manuyal on your machine handy before you begin surgery.

Thanks for the quick response. I really appreciate it. The pto lever travels the full distance and there is no play at all in the pto shaft. The pto engages and a it spins fine. When i put it under load it pops out. I can hold the pto lever up and it will stay engaged. As it spins i can feel it bump in my hand. If i let go of the pto this bump that i feel will disengage it. The tractor only has 1000 hours on it.I am ordering a manual today. Thanks for all of your help i greatly appreciate it.

I'm not as well familiar with 1310 so I went to NH website. You do have a detent mechanism for the pto. On the attachment below look at parts # 53 and 54 that is your pto detent mechanism. #52 being your pto shifter fork and #63 pto handle. I could not see where you can have access to it and it was not readily obvious from that diagram and your pictures. I looked at the lift cover and can not see any reference to to the detent mechanism there. Look around with the attachment I have below to see if you can find access for PTO ball and spring. I'm sure the only access to pto shifter fork and associated parts can only be done by removing the lift cover.

I think you got a weak detent mechanism.

could be a bent shifter fork as well.. perhaps not letting it go into full engagement.

Thanks for all the info. I just ordered the shop repair manual $75. Should be well worth it though since i plan on keeping the tractor for ever. Very nice solid tractor. I will post pics as i go along. All of you have been great and i really appreciate it. I never would have though about a bent fork. Looks like its going to be a big job, because i have to disconnect the hydro lines as well to take off the lift cover. Thanks again for all your help.

on a 1310? big job.. I don't think there's any big job on a lawnmower sized tractor..

bigger than an oil change.. but not bad.

I have looked at my 1700 , having a gantry, engine lifter or at least a good shade tree and come along and i know I can take the lift cover off under one hr although I have not done it yet my my 1700. The fact there isn't any sheet metal to remove makes it an easy job, take the seat off and you are about 10 bolts away from lifting the head.

same here.. even on a ford rowcrop 55-64, where the center housing is chest level.. pullingthelift cover is way under an hour.

2 bolts for seat.. then 2 pins for 3pt knuckles.. and a pin for toplink.. then just a bunch of perimeter bolts.

an overhead hoist is nice.. otherwise you are lifting up about 80# give or take. I just lay en rigt over on a tire and work usually.

I love working on small tracogtrs.

soething you can crib or bottle jack and set in front of and play with.

not like some of the larger ones where you are getting into 50-7--100+ hp and dealing with 7-8-9+ thousand pounds.. large .. large parts mor ethan you can lift indivifdually.. or need mor ethan normal height requirements for overhead lifting. those are less fun..

I can see. I like your rigging. what amazes me how heavy equipment is moved around where it appears almost effortless.:thumbsup:
