I have a couple of questions in other threads about my new to me Ford 1600, thought I'd start a dedicated thread vs. hijacking other threads. My 1600 has unknown hours, has a loader, and at this point I believe everything on it except the proof meter and the horn actually work! I'll use this thread to ask the experts for advice as I navigate fixing this tractor up for use maintaining my 8 acres. First, some pictures......

The existing proofmeter is toast. I found a replacement one based on advice from another post, just $70. The last picture below is the new proofmeter I bought. The only rustthrough is at thebase of the left fender. Ugly butI don't think it's hurting anything just yet.
My plans are to fix the leaking spools in the loader joysticks, fix a leaking bucket cylinder, then do all the need fluid and filter changes.

Where can I find kits to rebuild the loader joystick spools and the loader cylinder that are leaking (posted in the other thread already, sorry, no more duplicate threads from me going forward)

Went out and bought all the needed fluids to start flushing all the systems tomorrow. Hope there are no surprises!
My user manual says that the hydraulic resevoir takes 10.5 quarts of hydro fluid, and the rear axle and tranny take 21 quarts of gear oil. The guy at NH told me that is wrong and both the hydro and axle/tranny take a combined amt of 10.5 quarts. He said they share from the resevoirand sold me five gallons of Armor track brand hydrolic/transmission fuid. Is he right?

You NH guy is correct. diffy, hyd and transmission all share the same oil. NH-134 equal or better. My FO-44 catalog does not list 1600 but for my 1700 is about 23 quarts. 10.5 sounds not enough for both. If tractor is on level ground you can use the dip stick to put enough oil and not over fill. Not familiar with Armor track but read the back of the container to see if it meet NH-134. You do not put straight gear oil for transmission, it'll mix with hyd oil and makes a mess of things.

Odd that the Operator manual is very specific about using diff fluids for the axle/tranny vs. the hydro totaling 31.5 quarts. Agree though that mixing gear oil and hydro fluid would be bad

What color should the old fluid be? Mine is coming out a milky brown kind of like milk chocolate color

Water in the fluid will turn it milky, so the old fluid has water contamination. That alone will make the lifts not work right.

I have a shop manual #FO-44. It does not list a 1600 model. It does have 1100, 1200, 1300, 1500, 1700, 1900 but no 1600. I don't know why but your dash is a different shape than my 1700. I do not have a loader either. Fluids could be a different spec. (maybe) I don't know.

So i refreshed all the fluids today but the coolant, which was still good.
I have heard that the tranny/differential resevoir and the hydro resovoir kinda spill over eachother and are essentially the same. I definatly did not see that. The guy at NH dealer told me they were combined and would only take 20 quarts....WRONG. The rear diff with the dipstick benieth the seat was milky brown and took 20+ quarts to replace
The front section, the hydro, with the dip stick below the steering wheel, was not milky, looked like just some old dirty hydro fluid. It also took 20 quarts to top off. ( i assume the loader causes it to need more?).

I would have to say they are seperate Resevoirs

Then injector pump was reeealy low. Need to keep an eye on the.
Steering gear was also way low.
Changed the fuel filter, which for some reason caused the engine to run like crap for a while.....i am guessing the system didnt like that i slapped the new filter and bowl back on without filling it with fuel.

Next issue.....the tractor pulls to the left when moving forward. I think the "axle" (i guess its really not an axle, but i dont know what its called) is bent. See pic below taken from directly benieth center fron of tractor, the clearance/gap is closer on the left side. Anybody ever had this issue? Can an adjustment to the tie rods compensate for this problem?

what you show is the front axle and it appears to be bent but geometry of front axle pivot and axle does not support it. It might be design associate with 1600. went and looked at NH site. The diagram is isometric and does not show directly from top of bottom to see if the bend is there but can't see it bending the axle without the force g transferred with some deformation on the pivot. The problem with pulling one way is the tie rod. On one occasion I hot a stump with my 1700 tie rod and it bent it some causing to pull to the right. I tool the tire rod off with a ball joint separator tool (pitman puller) and straighten the tire rod and adjusted the toe in angle and she started going straight with no pull to either side.

JC,

ps. jack up the front of the tractor with the axle secured on two jack stand. The front wheels should be parallel and facing straight ahead.
