So today i went and bought my first personal tractor. Having grown up on a farm in my earlier year's and as i've said in my welcome post in the forum i wanted to dive back in to farming. So i caught wind of a great deal on a 1970 Ford 8000 in great shape. The tractor had 5950 hrs with a total motor rebuild at some point(was told but no proof). Every thing works needs a bath and a tune up (fluid's, filter's and etc.). But i got it for $3500 and it was only 25 miles from the house so that was a plus. Here are some pics will get better ones after a good wash, degrease, and wax...lol Anyone have any first hand experience i've never used one only 2-3-4000 ford's big step up lol also someone messed with the decal to make it look like a 8600 new decals soon!! hehe

Thanks all!! So some back history on the tractor it belonged to three brothers who were retiring from farming. They had bought all cabbed tractors and this one was put on reserve per say. It spent most it's time pulling a 22' foot disc and a large no till drill. It sat in the barn for 3 year's and they sold it to the man I got it from. He brought it home ran the PTO and put it in the barn for the last year starting it every little bit or to drive his kids around the farm. Now it's all mine to bring back to life lol. Anyway I got up early to wash the tractor really good and work on degreasing it which will take awhile. All the gagues worked and the fuel was old and smelled bad so I drained the tank and put 10 gallons of Fresh diesel and Injector cleaner in her. Well I bought the fuel filters and started to change them I usually change them one at a time. But the first one leaked and got air in the lines (which I found out later) so I just replaced them both after I took it back off. The bowl had a thick black goo in it and the drain holes in it were lodged full of crude. Cleaned everything good got it all working and put it all back on again. So after all that the tractor fired up ran for about 10 sec and died....Thus the air problem arrived...well after bleeding the filters many many time's then the pump and finally broke the inj. lines loose bleed them each 4 times. She fired up and has run great so far but, I belive the battery is weak they have a 5 year old car battery in it which is as weak as a popcorn fart. Which I plan to replace along with all the other fluids and filters. Well today I finally got to degrease it and wash it still a lot of degreasing to go and I also got my Ford 101 3 btm 14" plow out and sanded and painted it now tomorrow I'm going to do my 3pt sprayer next. I'll keep ya'll posted!! Thanks for reading and any helpful info

I'd suggest treating the fuel tank with a biocide. It'll kill any little "no seeums" growing in there. Black goo in the fuel system is sometimes an indicator of this problem.

Several years ago my Brother farmed with a tractor just like yours. They are very dependable. Good luck with yours!!!

Welcome to TBN!!!! :)

Update: So today we went 45 miles one way to the nearest Ford/New Holland dealer to pick up some item's. After standing around while all 7 employees were just sitting there talking. A female employee came from the back of the store and asked if i needed help...To which i replied "If i did I'd be in trouble at this business"... See smiled the others employees didn't find it funny but, it was very true. Anyway i asked for an Oil filter, Hydro Filter, Power steering filter and fluid, Special Brake fluid that is required and some big items like the 1000 PTO shaft and a weight Bar for the front. Well after 30 mins they managed to find the oil and Hydro filter and that's all. A very unhelpful, unorganized, impolite, and badly ran Dealer. Which just those two filters were $75.00... I drove home only to find they gave me the wrong oil filter. I called they never said sorry but thats what i called them in as clean a way i can put on here lol.

So after all that i had to go to the local napa got all the filters i needed and the fluid's for A LOT CHEAPER lol But i changed the oil and filter not to bad. But the Hydro fluid was dark brown and thin and the filter was very very nasty like chunks of Fluid fell out of it but, it all ran much better with a fresh filter and fluid. Which i will replace very soon again to have my self a base line maintenance chart.

Then i opened the Fuel injector pump oil plug and old nasty varnish smelling diesel flowed out flushed it with some clean motor oil twice and put the required motor oil in it hope they didn't ruin the pump.... Needless to say today was not a good day....

Hang in there!!!

It's a lot cheaper to buy filters and oil from other sources rather than the dealers, regardless of brand. Only time I'm concerned about that is if warranty is involved.

I agree you should repeat the filter changes after a few hours to make sure you capture all the old crud running around in the systems.

I'm most concerned about your fuel system. Get some additive to treat the possibility of algae as well as any moisture that's collected in there.

Keep us posted on your progress!!! :)

Make sure you get the right fluid from Napa. One is just hydraulic fluid but the step up is the one you need to handle wet brakes also. Most guys in the store will try to sell you the cheaper one so you gotta look close. Now ask me how I know. :)

Thanks all and yeah it was there premium hydro fluid for tractors. I plan on changing the fluids and filters soon. Just did filters for the moment to catch the big stuff next paycheck i'll change everything. I gotta replace the points on the 101 or grind them. I dont like how the new points are made. We did use it today just on the garden and only the front one dug the others clogged up with corn stalks since we only bush hogged not disc the field which we had never tried i see why now. lol But on a side not i picked up another piece of equipment to a John Deere Model L Series 51 Manure Spreader in great shape for a good price!! Now to repaint it and put it to wrok hehe IMG_0162.jpgIMG_0163.jpg
