IPad kicking me off when opening photos

Thank you for those pointers, I have a Gen 1 iPad. I do update my software by plugging in to the main computer, but also signed up for the Cloud updates. It won't hurt to plug it in again too. Also, I did not know about the trick of clearing out open apps, I will do that too.
Glad to know there are some things I can do on my own to fix it! Thank you!

Otto, another neat trick with the newest version of iOS software v1.61 or higher. Using all five fingers slide the screen upward. Now take a finger and slide the bottom tray to the right. Now you have access to both brightness and sound volume. Plus you can start and stop media. Then simply slide the screen back down.

If you want to tick the kids and better half off you can lock TBN on the screen where they can't exit from it without a password.. that's done in settings accessibility.
