IMHO old posts, say 6mths+ should be archived. Of of course they would be still be viewable and searchable.

It is a little bit of an irritation when a 6 year old thread is revived by a spammer, which seems to be happening alot recently.

How would you treat an old thread that was responded to recently?

I don't see any problem with an old thread being reactivated if there is a question asked. Usually someone, will mention the last post date within 1 or 2 replies. If someone else comes across an old thread that pertains to their problem/issue and it hasn't been answered to the "new" posters comfort level, then reopen it and ask away. If you don't wish to reply to and old thread don't. 1 mouse click and you are back to the new/recent posts. Just before coming to thsi one, I replied to a 3 year old thread, where new memeber had a legitamte question regarding the same issue. I that case why start a new thread.
I normally see these older threads opened by newer members. After awhile we all get used to looking at the last post date.

What difference does it make?...it's the information that is pertinent...not the time frame...if you have something to contribute do so...if not ignore it...

The only things that really keep things fresh is new users and new issues/problems...those looking for answers/solutions often find what they seek via Google etc. searches that return older threads...
What is a shame is that many of the (way) older threads don't have image links that still work...

If old threads were locked, there would be nothing to "treat".

If a person is finding the information useful in the old,locked thread, but they need more answers, they are free to start a new one to ask that question. The info contained in the old thread is still valid and searchable, so it's not like the original thread contributors work was in vain.

if you really want a easy way to know if you are responding to a old thread - let's say a thread with no last response 2 years old or older - perhaps the quick reply box could be in a shaded color? We could send a request to the admin to try to work out a programming... what do you think guys ?

this would be a fairly easy mod. for a PHP programmer...not sure if the 'Vb' gods offer something similar...
