Seems after a hard day of tilling my PTO will still spin even after being disengaged.. w/ enough torque to still spin the tines on the tiller.

Is there an adjustment for the engagement/disengagement of the PTO.. from just looking.. I didn't see any.

Maybe it's time to send the tractor to the dealer?

If your tractor falls within the Serial Numbers below, your tractor may be included in this New Holland Recall for PTO brake malfunction:

16. PTO Brake problems for serial numbers after G524944 to approximately G604974, recall campaign 000250.

If it is just an oil drag spin.. I'd guess your pto brake was shot. however.. if you drop the tiller int he ground.. will it try to till? If so.. I'd guess your pto clutch was dragging.

I saw an old ford 8000 do that... I was going to buy the unit, had a good working dual power tranny.. etc.. but pto seemed to spin no matter if lever was engaged or disengaged..

I was going to hook up a mower to see if it was a static spin.. or if it was really stuck engaged... never got a chance to get back to it before it sold... just as well anyway.. if it had been broke.. some of them tranny gears can be expensive!

Thankyou..

I'll have to check my serial number.

"if you drop the tiller int he ground.. will it try to till?"

It does stop w/ resistance.. if I sat the tiller on the ground.. it stops the PTO.

I've always done my best to ease the engagement of implements.. and w/ implements like a rotary cutter.. I use the engine RPM's to slow it down before disengaging to save the PTO braking mechanism.

My guess would be bad pto brake then.. as you are getting some rotation on it due to oil coupling...

This happened to me on my TC55DA... The dealer replaced the PTO clutch under warranty.

Make sure when you use your PTO that you put it in gear BEFORE you crank up the RPM... ...not the other way round. I know it seems obvious, but it's worth stating.

Mine failed after installing my 452nd fence post in a pretty much non-stop effort (other than sleeping and eating). I'm getting my warranties' worth...

"Make sure when you use your PTO that you put it in gear BEFORE you crank up the RPM"

That would tuff.. it's a Hydrostatic.. it's always in gear unless I'm starting the tractor. I bought my 35D in 2000.. @1665 hrs.. I'm out of warrenty.. not in the recall list.. so I'm on my own for the repair bill.

I've been working on my fencing for a while.. but w/ raising steers.. haying.. raising a few crops.. I usually only get to work on fence when it's rainy.

I hope it's just a bad pto brake like SoundGuy said.

Hey.. Welcome to TBN!

Ken... I really doubt that your PTO is always engaged on that tractor... if so, it's about 65 years behind in technology. Even my 1946 ford 2N has a lever to engage / disengage the pto...

SoundGuy.. I must've been half asleep.. I mis-read what he had said.. I thought he was saying put the tractor in gear.. not the pto in gear.

I always engage the pto at low rpm's.. and even then I ease the engagement.. especially for mowers, rotary cutters, and the baler.

"my 1946 ford 2N"

On my MF65.. it has two PTO gearing selections.. one is engine speed.. the other is ground speed. If the PTO is in ground speed.. and you put the tractor in Reverse.. the PTO spins in Reverse too. This is made to un-jam the corn huskor attachment if it gets clogged up.
