The battery in my old 8N is bad and I am thinking about putting the battery in my TC33D in the 8N and getting a new battery for the TC33D. I am not sure what to ask for at the auto store when I go in there? I thought about going to walmart but still dont know what to ask for as far as a battery. Anyone can help, jump in here and tell me?

Are you looking for a direct replacement? ...a sealed lead-acid (SLA)? ...a dry chemical type? The type of battery you want to use will determine what to ask for. Also, I think I know the exact type and arrangement of terminals for the standard OEM, but instead of just taking a stab at it, I'll let someone with a Class II tractor give you exact info.

If you truly have a "restored" 8N, it must still be in its original 6 volt configuration. Putting a 12 volt battery in it will be problematic. If the 8N has been converted to 12 Volt, I would consider using a description other than restored, but that's my problem, not yours.

Measure the battery box area in both length and width. The determine how long the cables are and if they are long enough to reach to the front of the battery box assuming that the replacement battery is going to be 9 inches high. This is important because you might find a battery that will fit in the battery box, but the terminals are at the front of the battery when they are in proper orientation to where your positive and negative posts are located. Once you have this information in hand, then go to the place that you are going to purchase the battery, with ruler in hand, measure the choices that you have. I have found that Walmart has a good selection of the now current size available batteries, and the cost is quite reasonable. If you purchase a 1 year warranty battery, expect it to last not much more than 3 years under normal conditions. If you purchase a 2 year warranty battery, it will last between 4 and 5 years usually. I never consider the 3 year warranty batteries because they are not worth the premium price that they cost. If you need a 6 volt battery, then your choices of purchase locations is limited to auto parts stores, or such locations as a Interstate battery dealer. I don't remember ever seeing a 6 volt battery in Walmart. Also expect to pay a lot more for the 6 volt battery, since the cost of manufacturing is greater and the demand is less. Dusty

Both batterys are 12 volt, the 8N has been changed over. I just thought since I was going to buy a new battery I would get it to fit the tractor I used the most which is my TC33D. The 8N battery is the one that went bad and thats mainly due to the 8N sitting just here looking pretty and just going to shows etc. I will make that trip to walmart after I measure the battery. I just thought someone would have already done this and maybe know exactly what to ask for. I will certainly make a note in my tractor maintenance file for future reference so we can all have it.

I think most of us with a TC33D have acid damage from the OEM battery spitting out acid. It can make a huge mess of not just the battery area but the radiator too, and beyond.
I'd go with a dry cell Odyssey as MikePA said, or an AGM battery like an Optima. If you go with an Optima you need a model 51. A model 51R Optima will work too - it just faces the other way, but the cables are long enough. A larger Optima will fit, but you have to modify the battery tray. |

I put an Optima in my TC 29 about 4 years ago; slight modifacations but worth it. Gel cell and takes vibration very well

After reading all of this and the related post I might be better off just replacing the little standard $29.95 battery in the 8N and leaving my TC33D battery right where it is! What an adventure!
