hello all.i was wondering how the new shell rotella 15w-40 would do in my gas powered kohler engine?i have been using castrol gtx 10w-30 in it for about 7 years.i was just wondering if the new rotella was even rated for use in gas powered engines.

You can use Rotella in gas or diesel engines, and you'd only be giving up a little bit on the cold-start flow capabilities. In general, diesel oils are better at keeping impurities at bay so I use them in all my vehicles and engines.

The Rotella triple 15W-40 is rated SM-SL for gas engines so as long as your engine is rated for the viscosity no problems. I believe SM is the latest API rating designator.

SM is the latest rating. I doubt a Kohler engine requires the current rating anyway. Why switch to a different brand and higher viscosity? Unless you're having issues with oil consumption, or are using it in the arabian desert, I think you would be better staying with the current viscosity. Brand pref is up to you and ultimately not that critical.

For THAT engine...stick with the 10W-30 Castrol.

i guess i just wanted to see how it performed in a much cheaper engine before i put it in my way more expensive atv or diesel tractor.i have been getting a very slight engine clicking, for lack of a better word, on first startup.after it gets warmed up the clicking goes away.i just thought that the rotella might protect better that all.
thanks for all the thoughts,

How old is your Kohler? You might want to try some Marvel Mystery Oil in the oil and/or gas. Suppose to clean up the valves/lifters when used in the oil..... lots of people seem to swear by it on some other lawn/garden tractor groups.

Small gas engines usually use straight 30wt or that multi weight you are using. But try a little Marvel in the crank case.

Marvel Mystery Oil
My Dad was one of those "use MMO all the time guys", so I am too. Dunno if it makes a difference or not but, if he said to use it, that's what I do.

I think I read somewhere, maybe in here, that it's just a mix of ATF/kerosene or something? Smells neat, tho....
