I'm running Rotella 5w-40 in my Kubota, Cummins powered Dodge, Jeep, KTM dirt bike and lawn mowers.

Wiil, you should also look at ESSO XD-3 EXTRA 0W40. It's a synthetic available at Walmart in Canada. I found it less expensive than Mobil 1. It is rated for severe diesel service, good cold starting. I also use it for my smaller gas engines so I only have to have 1 oil on hand. Didn't notice a lot of difference in my Massey, but 17hp B&S ran a whole lot smoother than with a straight 30 weight.

All of their heavier 10W30 & 15W40 are for gasoline engines. What are you all running?

Warranties are nice to have, so we want to be careful.

I was looking at Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W40 too, but there's a warning on the label: "not for use in 2007 diesel engines" or something to that effect. Does this apply to my new 32 hp Yanmar 3cyl diesel tractor engine?

So will this apply to our 1523 also?? Why is that?? So what other oil options exist??

There have been lubricity issues with the new USLD fuel, in some cases, additives that are being used to eliminate this problem, are causing compatibility issues with certain other additives. Lots of products are being reformulated to deal with this problem, in the mean time, I have noticed that some are displaying the warning label for legal protection. Possibly because the 2007+ engines were made to run on USLD?

It only applies to the new diesel trucks because of the new emission junk. I guess the new diesels run hotter with less lube in the fuel too. I'm sure it doesn't apply to tractors. For an 07 diesel you might want to look at the new 5w40 Amsoil diesel oil. Later, ihookem

You need a block heater and oil heater. Or a heated garage if possible. Even your hydraulic fluid will be tough to warm up at -50.

The 5w-40 is only better if you live in the arctic.

I am not convinced this is true. Multigrade oils are made by dissolving special polymers in the oil. Not only do the polymers increase the viscosity of the oil, they introduce something call the Weisenberg effect. This changes the viscosity from a scalar number to a tensor, and makes the equations that describe lubrication difficult enough to make my head hurt.

One of the many results of the Weisenberg effect is that a film of oil between two moving surfaces will now produce an extra force which tends to separate the surfaces. This provides a lot of extra wear reduction.

As a general rule, the wider the viscosity range on the can, the stronger the Weisenberg effect is.

Thank you, Dave... You provided information that "I had never, ever heard of"!

However, you didn't clue us in on what brand, type of oil you use...

I've been using the synthetic Rotella T 5w40 for a couple of years now.

Although, I might throw in some Mobil 1 5w40 Diesel, RV, etc in my 2008 JD110 if there's any reason I shouldn't stay with the Rotella.
