I have been reading several posts on various diesel forums about the benefits of adding 1oz of marine 2 cycle oil (no ash) per gallon of ULSD. Several people are saying it helps add lubrication and it improves fuel economy with ULSD. Anyone on this site doing the same? I not ready to try it, but I am interested.

2-Stroke marine engine lubricant; does increase MPG up to 1.5 to 2.5mpg, extra fuel lubricity, smoother, quite sounding Cummins

Been using Amsoil HP 2-Stroke TC-W3 marine lubricant in our 2nd generation Cummins 5.9L ISB for 2 years, with the Bosh VP44 injector pump; which is totally fuel lubricated and does benefit from the added lubricant.

I also use the Wal-Mart "Super-Tec 2-stroke marine lubricant, it's much cheaper than Amsoil, and provides the same results for less cash.

If your diesel tractor is a new higher PSI (CR) "common rail" type injection system then it's really not necessary to add extra lubricant in #2D. Choose a hight quality fuel additive for CR diesels that is a "true" lubricant, example Amsoil's diesel fuel additives, Lucas diesel or gasoline fuel lubricant upper cylinder type.

I would avoid other brands that are high solvent based ie: paint thinner, acetone. What are those brands: Powerservice, MMO; which I have used both in the past, no more.

I add 1/2 quart per 45 gallons of fuel, have added 1 quart before no smoking either

I would use careful consideration before adding anything to ULSD.

If you read this study, Lubricity Additive Study Results - Diesel Place, many things people swore by for years, no longer work in ULSD.

It may make perfect sense that more oil is going to help with lubricity, except, it does not necessarily work that way in ULSD. Take Marvel Mistery oil as an example, it actually lowered lubricity of ULSD.

That study has been copied all over the Diesel forums, if you have a 6.4L powerstroke or 6.6L powerstroke diesel yes Ford does not recommend any fuel additives; becuase of the increased EGT during DPF burnoff cycle, additives increase the BTU's of diesel fuel.

If your running a NON emission ladden diesel the 2-Stroke addtive to ULSD does not "hurt" the engine. Results do very like I said in a Common rail Bosch Cp3 fuel injector pump 2-stroke is a waste of money, in a rotory style Bosh pump's or the holy grail of pumps the BOSCH P7100 do see some benefit for add fuel lubrication for 2-stroke

Biodiesel was rated the best and should be cheap, just put 2oz. of biodiesel per gallon and this ends up being the best of all. Even 1 oz. per gallon helps more than some of the very expensive brands.

Hiya,

I've always wanted to try a high sulfur gear lube like EP-90 as a fuel lubricity additive but I've got way too much $ invested in engines to try it..... Anyone try it?

Tom

I would highly recommend against using gear oil. It is in no way shape or form designed to be a lubricity additive for fuel.

Agree in general, but have a few reservations... You're the only person that I've seen that claims an increase in mpg. I add 2 cycle and have no increase in mpg, nor do I expect any. Unless the additive is cleaning a dirty injector, there is no reason to have mpg change. (I'm sensitive to mpg claims as I check them out and have excellent fuel records and have found no "cure" for adding more miles per gallon other than slowing down.) Also, the ULSD fuel in known to be lower in lubricity and the higher pressure systems with common rail (20-24,000 psi) NEEDs more lubricity than usa fuel provides. Its actually more important for common rail as the pumps are working harder.

But, you are dead on as far as the old snake oil additives!

Not to pile on but I too scoffed at the mpg increase....that is an incredible percentage claimed. Ahh if only it was so easy to bump mpg up:rolleyes:
