I've been sitting around, acting pretty smug, thinking I knew just about all there was about oil filters for the Yanmar engines in my various small John-Deere equipment (3 cyl engines, 20 - 33 HP), and some Kubota's that a few guys owned. It seemed pretty simple, since they all take pretty much the same filter (WIX 51365/NAPA 1365), which fits a whole pile of applications (Honda cars and motorcycles, I think someone mentioned it fits Subarau's, etc..). A universal filter!! As thatguy mentioned in this thread http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/oil-fuel-lubricants/132746-kubota-oil-filter-made-china.html a 51356 will work, too, it's a longer version of the 51365. Everything was good.
Then, I was at my brother's the other night; Brothers 1 & 2 were changing the engine and hydro fluid and filters on their J-D 755's, getting ready for winter. Being the curious type, I was poking around Bro #1's stash of filters, and noticed a NAPA 1334; when I asked him what it was for, he said "the 755", which I thought was most unusual, since I was operating under the assumption that the NAPA 1365 was THE one to use. Hmmm....
Bro. #2 had a 1365 on his 755, and, when we took it off and compared the 1334 to it, we noticed the 1334 has the same M20x1.5 thread and gasket size, but is about 1/2" larger in diameter, and 1/2" longer.
Remembering that my 955 (33 HP Yanmar) uses a NAPA 1064, I ran off and gathered up one of those to compare. The 1064 is just a "short" version of the 1334!!
According to the WIX chart, the flow rate, bypass setting, etc.., are pretty much the same throughout. So, now you have other choices, if you like 'horizontally challenged' filters. YES, I've found a filter that matches my body type..
So, if you like skinny filters, or if space is tight, it looks like:
WIX 51365/NAPA 1365 or WIX 51356/NAPA 1356 (longer)
Fat filters:
WIX 51064/NAPA 1064 or WIX 51334/NAPA 1334 (longer)
You can cross to Purolator, etc.., as applicable.
This is obviously important if you have a variety of equipment, since only keeping one filter # on hand makes it a lot easier. Or, if you need a filter and the guy is out of one of them, you have three others to pick from.
All is good again.
For now....
