Stange as it may seem, CF is still a current API rating as of 2009. From the API website:
"Introduced in 1994. For off-road, indirect-injected and other diesel engines including those using fuel with over 0.5% weight sulfur. Can be used in place of CD oils."

I stand corrected.. the chart i was using had gas and diesel ratings side by side and I read the gas SG rating to the right of the CF..

That's because diesel engines have a diesel specific oil sensor. This sensor will analyze the oil, and check all the specific types, and ratings, against a database on the internet. The moment the sensor determines that there is an oil in your engine, that has not been specifically made, only for a diesel engine, it triggers a self destruct sequence that will destroy your engine in seconds. :confused2:

Ken VT, I'm not sure but, I believe diesel oils have a high pressure lubricant to meet the demands of the higher compression rate of the diesel engine and the pressure applied to the bearings etc. during combustion. Some diesels are 20:1 or higher where gas engines are 9 or 10:1.
Someone let me know if I heard wrong. Someone could have been b.s.'n me? Dave

I'm not a diesel oil specialist by any means but I know a bit about gasoline oils. As we all know, diesels generate a lot of soot, and from what I understand diesels oils are specifically formulated to keep the soot (that is not trapped by the oil filter) in suspension so it doesn't collect in areas and clog up small oil passages. The additive packages are somewhat different as well

If I'm out to lunch, someone please correct me.

CH and CI oils were established in the mid '90s for the HEUI fuel systems used by CAT and International, and to support on-road emissions technologies. CF isn't suitable for ANY on-road diesel made after about 1998 or so and I'd not use it in anything regardless of age.

The earliest rating I would suggest for ANY diesel, on or off road is CH with CI being preferred for off-road and CJ is REQUIRED for on-road with USEPA 2007 and later products.

I did the same thing when I did my 50hr oil change this past winter because I did not know there was a difference. I had run it 10 hours with the gas oil in it when I figured it out. I was planning to do another oil change in the spring anyway so got the right oil to use then. I like to change oil in the spring because it is used the hardest in the winter. Another 10 hours, so 20 hours on the wrong oil. I don't believe it hurt anything for the time it was in there. It was a bit blacker that the oil I drained at 50 hours though.
