Tractor Supply Trans/Hydraulic Fluid- JD 450C Dozer??

I'm sure this topic has been beat to death on the site, but I need to change the Transmission Oil in my old John Deere 450C crawler.

Is Traveller Universal Tractor Trans/Hydraulic Fluid from Tractor Supply a good oil?

AFAIK, it is a Warren Oil product. Warren is a great company who also blends and distributes for many, many house brands from WalMart SuperTech to AutoParts stores. Perhaps this will help you decide based on price? In other words, might get the same product elsewhere for less or pay more.

There are some huge supporters here on TBN of Warren UTF. Soundguy, "member of the month", runs a lot of equipment and swears by it.

To get Hy-Gard specs I had to get the $35 vs $25 buckets at TSC for our 1983 Backhoe.

Good? i dont know about that but take this for what it's worth to you and you decide since you posted and want to know,

in short the TSC Traveller UTF will work ok if it's spec'd for your application lots of people use it,,that said, it is however a lower end fluid that does have less additives then a name brand oil i.e Hy-gard, Hy-trans etc.

i do see now they(TSC) have a new formula of this oil out called "Renew" that they claim has a better additive package/seal conditioners for older tractors, if going that rout i'd use the renew.

also keep in mind there's "recommended for" and "meets specification" there is a difference thats why it's worded different.

the standard UTF states "recommended for" the renew states "meets specification"

Current Deere Hy-Gard specs are JDM-20C for "normal" and JDM-20D for low viscosity Hy-Gard (UTF).

According to this 2004 article from Jobbers World the JDM J20A and J20C additive packages are the same specs. They just added two tests to prove it met the Allison C-4 test in the early 90's.

"The primarily reason Deere upgraded toJDM-20C was to capture the requirements of the Allison C-4 specification. This was done by the addition of an oxidation and seal test. All of the other tests rigs carried over from JDM-20A."

Tractor Suppy (TSC) Traveller "Premium" Universal Tractor Trans/Hydraulic Fluid states it,​

"Meets the Following Original Equipment Manufactures Specifications" which is what you want vs. "recommend", etc.​

While there must be 50+ listed the two that apply to this thread are:​

John Deere HYGARD Fluid (JDM J20C)
John Deere 303 Fluid (JDM J20A, JDM J14B) The regular lower price TSC meets this I think but do not have a label at the computer.​

Since there is not a physical difference between JDM J20A and JDM J20C I guess either one for the two TSC UT T/H fluids would work perhaps just as well?​

I dont know about that last i knew Traveller was supplyed by Warren i have a MSDS sheet i got from TSC stating that, but whats strange is it states Warren for the standard UTF but no info for the Renew,this oil just came out new earler this year so the info on it is still in the pipe line by the looks of it.


right the high and low viscosity Hy-Gard would be built the same just different visc.

daman1 there seems to be a lot of confusion (perhaps by design) on most fluids.

I know Traveller's Premium UTF states Meets OEM specs so maybe it is made by Shell as on was told. Warren may even make some of Shells products as far as I know.

Guys here on TBN with large tractors that take gallons and gallons of UTF to do a change out, maybe look at a the price difference of using a more generic fluid through different lens, especially if they have 3 or 4 large tractors to service. The savings can be substantial and the difference in performance may not be even noticeable.

The fellows with sub compacts like the Deere 2305, the Massey GC and Kubota BX series tend to use their brands very best, from their dealer. First, these smaller machines hold only a few gallons, making the price differential somewhat more inconsequential. Add to that, the sub-cut hydro runs pretty hot and already whines enough, in most cases and so while a generic wouldn't likely cause a failure within a few hours of use, or anything like that, the reports of increased whine and foaming are too numerous to count.
