Drain plugs, etc.

I feel this need to confess--I'm a slow learner. I purchased my JD Model 670 a couple of years ago. When I piled up 50 hours and prepared to change the engine oil for the first time, I was horrified to discover that the drain plug was only finger-tight! It could have vibrated off!

More recently I saw that I was approaching 150 hours and decided that it might be a good idea to change the transmission/hydraulic system oil--even though I've got a gear tractor without a loader or other hydraulic-driven implements. Anyway, I crawled under and discovered that the drain plug on the transmission was also only finger-tight. It too could have vibrated off! Also, when I checked the rubber hose from the transmission vent, I found it plugged tightly with mud-dauber mud. And when I removed the fine-mesh screen (the basic Model 670 doesn't have a cartridge filter) I found a bunch of insect wings, body-parts, etc. My tractor sat on the dealer's lot for awhile before I acquired it. Apparently the wasps had crawled up the vent tube, died and were decapitated.

The moral of this story is: When you get a new tractor, check it over!!

By the way, I found no evidence of metal shavings or such.

Yes and things keep vibrating off too Glenn. I'm constantly going over my tractors and equipment retightening things, especially on the old massey.

Your guys scare me with all the talk about re-tightening nuts and bolts, wheels coming off John Deeres, etc. I lost one little nut and bolt off my B7100 that bolted the fender to the floorboard, and I've never found another loose nut or bolt on either of my Kubotas. I haven't had any problems with "stuff" vibrating loose. But I do check the loader and backhoe mounting bolts. My biggest problem (fear) is things rubbing through. I haven't had anything rub through yet. I have been doing a lot of preventive stuff like; wraping pieces on tire tube with cable ties on hose and wires, bending (slightly) steel hydraulic lines away that were rubbing on the loader mounts, etc. Another thing I did do was to put a screen over my intake snorkel to keep the mice from building a nest in my air cleaner or worse chewing through the paper element.
