Don't feel bad. I wrestled with changing out the grease cartridges and got grease all over myself until I figured out it shouldn't be that hard.

Hi chabat,

Don't feel bad... even now that you know which end is up so to speak, I've found every grease gun to be temperamental at one time or another... usually due to air...

"Pump... come on now pump... this time... here it comes... d'oh!"

Huh, that sounds like a Viagra commercial... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Okay; now the grease cartrige is in and the gun is all closed up and we want to pump but it don't pump! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There may be a button or some other device like a threaded plug on the front of the gun [ by the pumping mechanism] that will allow you to bleed out air. If it's threaded be kinda careful and have the spring lever in control so you can lock it. Otherwise its new cartridge time. If its a button push/pull it to let the air out.

Another method is to pull back, turn and lock the spring handle so you can apply pressure while pumping the grease gun handle. This just may get the air out. Usually the quickest and least messy.

Note; the spring pushing the grease forward may get weak after time and doing the above may be required from time to time exspecially in cold weather.

Clear as mud? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif There will be others here who can describe the method much better. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nah, you're not an idiot. If you are, we both are. The first time I loaded a grease gun, I had grease up to my elbows and all over the body of the gun. The only way I could hold it was in a vice. It was obvious that there had to be an easier way to do it so I did what you did, I asked somebody. I wonder how many of us had the same first time experience that you just had. Probably more than are willing to admit it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It took me a long time to realize that when you pull that long spring loaded plunger back that it can be latched open. My method was to use my feet to hold the plunger out and do the reloading real quick before the plunger would slip and send the new canister out.

Now that I pull and latch, things are way easier.

After it is all reloaded, release the spring plunger and push it all the way back home. Then pump the pump like crazy until you get to pure grease. There will be some air in the pump that doesn't pump as well as grease.
