I do not really know what a flail mower does or is, but was thinking it "might" work better for me.

Here's the issue: I cleared about 5 acres in front of our place when we built the house. it is very rocky ( not the kind you just dig/ pick up and move) but they are low enough to go over I just need to raise the brush hog up anyway it beats the h**l out of the brush hog and me trying to keep the grass down so as i was mowing last night I stated thinking maybe the flail mower with the chain knifes swing vertically would work better:confused:

Am I smoking crack here, or would this be a potential solution???

Thanks in advance:)

On edit" I think I should have put this in the attachment section. but i do not know how to move it. sorry

Neither one enjoys whacking rocks. Both will be beaten up.

Can you drag a box blade around and dig up the rocks with the scarifiers? Then move them with a landscape rake?

I think it would work just fine. They are quite a bit of
extra money though vs. a rotary cutter. I mow a large
amount of right-of-way and flail mowers have a low
probablility of discharging objects. I simply ordered the
rotary cutter with front/rear chains after much research/
debate between the two.

Your situation would still inflict pain and suffering on
the swinging knives and they're a pain/$$ I hear to
sharpen/replace. I guess I'd prefer to beat up the
blade on a RC in this situation. Mine has all the
stump-jumper junk which helps but short of removing
the rocks, you don't have more than two options
as I see it.

You could always raise up the 5 acres to flatten it out
which I guess would be a third option ;)

Maybe you could apply some roundup around and between the rocks and not mow that little area.

Anything that can mow the grass and weeds fairly close to the ground will try to mow the rocks... and fail!

I'd say stick with the bush hog

You could always put a fence around it and raise sheep! The rocks won't bother them and instead of wearing out a mower and paying for fuel you could sell the sheep in the fall for a tidy profit. May or may not be an option for you but it is a good way to keep the grass down. A couple of years ago our town contracted with a local farmer to put his sheep in the fenced in area around the water treatment plant ponds. It saved them a lot of money vs. mowing weekly.
