Sadly, the truth be known, I have never dressed for the part. I always look like I don't belong... but I just can't be... or even feel like... a phony. For better or for worse... I am what I am.

Doug, I went back and read through your original message again, and a little off-topic maybe, but along the lines I think of your post.

Why don't you have a PHD with auger's?

My 2cents and probably about what it is worth, is that you should be able to pick up some work, by finding some lawncare folks that are wanting to get into landscaping, (I am assuming you want to be more into tractor work then landscaping) and co-op on some jobs.

On our tractor, it is about 50/50 between PHD and BB when doing landscaping.

I would bet that there are several small scale landscapers, unwilling or unable to make the "jump" into tractor work but would like to bid it in with their installs. I know for us, it allows us access to a lot of jobs that just would not be practical without the tractor.

Hi Alan - Some of your comments go right to the core of my business plan. Indeed, I will never be a residential lawncare guy... or landscaper... or landscape design guy. If you saw my property, you'd understand why in a split second!

No, I am a fundamentally a tractor and backhoe guy. My business card and ads talk about "landscape project assistance" (among many other things) for homeowners, landscapers and small contractors. I simply have no interest in residential lawncare (even though it can make huge money around here) and no skill whatsoever in landscape design. In fact, my business insurance specifically forbids landscape design (the insurance folks must have driven by my house!!!). But you give me a regrading, drainage, foundation and materials delivery or removal plan and I'll follow it to the letter. It's the engineer still left in me.

I also offer numerous "specialty" services. But in regard to your specific point, I will most likely be buying a PHD soon, but mainly for my own needs. I am installing a stockade fence around my yard. I realize that some of the bigger augers could be useful for shrubs and small trees, but I've always got my backhoe for that. Later this summer, I'll also be getting an FEL stump bucket... also useful for what limited planting or tree moving I might be doing.

Client interest so far has been focused mainly on regrading, drainage issues, materials placement, stumps, bush-hogging and tilling in that order... plus a bunch of small demolition, property clean-up and construction tasks. Other than for my own use, so far there has been no real business demand for a PHD.

Don't know what your timeframe is - but as soon as I'm done with my fence, I'll have an agri-supply PHD for sale. At my current rate of progress it could well be leaf peeping season before I'm done (due to work & family demands and added to the mix this week a sick dog - I should start writing country music songs),

Hi Steve - Thanks for the offer... I'll certainly keep it in mind. One funny thing however: If I can legitimately justify it for the business, I can deduct it! So I will be jumping on one fast if a job suddenly demands one... and probably "new with store receipt" as the IRS scrutinizes such purchases to the Nth degree for very small businesses like mine.
