Hi Alan - Some of your comments go right to the core of my business plan. Indeed, I will never be a residential lawncare guy... or landscaper... or landscape design guy. If you saw my property, you'd understand why in a split second!
No, I am a fundamentally a tractor and backhoe guy. My business card and ads talk about "
landscape project assistance" (among many other things) for homeowners, landscapers and small contractors. I simply have no interest in residential lawncare (even though it can make
huge money around here) and no skill whatsoever in landscape design. In fact, my business insurance
specifically forbids landscape design (the insurance folks must have driven by my house!!!). But you give me a regrading, drainage, foundation and materials delivery or removal plan and I'll follow it to the letter.
It's the engineer still left in me.
I also offer numerous "specialty" services. But in regard to your specific point, I will most likely be buying a PHD soon, but mainly for my own needs. I am installing a stockade fence around my yard. I realize that some of the bigger augers could be useful for shrubs and small trees, but I've always got my backhoe for that. Later this summer, I'll also be getting an
FEL stump bucket... also useful for what limited planting or tree moving I might be doing.
Client interest so far has been focused mainly on regrading, drainage issues, materials placement, stumps, bush-hogging and tilling in that order... plus a bunch of small demolition, property clean-up and construction tasks. Other than for my own use, so far there has been no real business demand for a PHD.
