When I saw this I thought I'd post it.

Since Dougster likes to paint Mass as having high taxes, I thought you'd like to know that Mass ranks 28th in total tax burden on it's residents. That's right Mass ranks in the bottom half of the states. I lived in Mass for years and also felt its taxes were high. When I moved I realized I was wrong.

Those of you in Vermont have the least money left to buy tractors.

See where your state ranks.

Hey Doug, the Peoples Republic of Pennsylvania has a higher tax burden than Mass Maybe I will move closer to you.

That chart looks like it is strictly state taxes. Many states that have higher state taxes have lower local taxes, and vice versa, whatever that means.

Arkansas, a high tax state. Who wudda thunk it?

We visited and vacationed in NH last year. We really liked it, and I thought the tax structure seemed reasonable. Did a little research when we got back, and I concluded it was a low tax state. Nice to see that table confirm my conclusion. Prior to going up there, I had always thought of it as a high tax state.

DC shouldn't be last on that list, if the list is in tax ranking order. It is a high tax area. Just look at the numbers.

It says state and local taxes. The few states I am familiar with seem to be in appropriate spots, so I think it really is state and local.

Although it says "State and Local" on the first line, the second line says "State % Tax Burden" so I'm not sure. I know that where I live here in KY, the local city & county also has an income tax (euphemisticly called Occupational Taxes) as well as local sales taxes; these vary throughout the state by city/county. Our local officials also seem to have a mind set that ever grander projects can be financed by just issuing bonds that "won't cost the tax payers anything". I'm sure we're not unique in this regard.

It's just a column heading. You make them too long and you waste columnar space.

Actually, after studying this list, it is seriously flawed. Our state sales tax is 6%. That leaves the remaining 4.8% of our taxes to property, county, township, school, gas, tire, income, etc, etc.

And you are saying that 4.8% isn't enough?
