TODAYS SEAT TIME

   / TODAYS SEAT TIME #1,541
You guys should be my neighbors. I do four woodsheds full each year, including my own. I help another neighboring family with theirs most years, and built them a woodshed. I've been doing this for a decade now. I guess I have done as much as 15 or 16 cords in a year, or as little as 10. In this time I haven't charged a cent. Mine is a path of service. The rewards are not easy to quantify. I think it has something to do with happiness. Warm people make me happy. :)

It's funny... I don't really do Christmas. I have to lay low at this time of year. All these people keep trying to give me things. I wish they'd all just get together and build me a big shop.

I moved a long row of tops that were in the corner of a field down into the woods. By the time I finished the ground was getting soft. It got up to 35* today. Pretty nice.

I ran the PHD today again. I drilled the last 4 holes for the intended fence line, and then after we finished that section I drilled an end post hole 295' down, ran a string and drilled the first 3 holes for the NEXT chunk of fence (295' worth minus the 24 feet I'm putting in tomorrow).

We goofed up the holesand had to hand dig them, so all we got done before dark was digging and dropping the posts into the holes.

Pics tomorrow.

I think LstInThot and Jonnyc1999 are coming over tomorrow to assist and who knows what may happen... :D:thumbsup:

More updates later, need to shower and fix dinner.

Merry Christmas!

David

PS - It was weird, it was so warm (mid 60's?) that I was in a t-shirt and sweating through my leather gloves...

PPS - And now it is RAINING! faily hard too! Weird weather!

RE:Short Game - I tip my hat to you for helping your neighbors in such a way.

Man, I love attaboys!

The neighboring family just up the road that I help is the best story. I've known the guy since he was born. He has his parents' place and now he has a wife and two boys of his own. He's a big strong guy, a glass blower. I got him to get his own saw and he's doing his own bucking and splitting now. That guy can definitely swing a maul. He still brings me his saw to file, and show him how again. I'll be going over there soon to pull some of his logs out for him. Maybe someday he'll be helping me with my wood.

This is the one picture I managed to get yeaterday.

If you look to the right, in the distance you can see the 176' section of fence we finished yesterday, and in the foreground of the picture are the last 3 posts that I bought as extra "just in case" posts and I am setting them as the beginning of the next 295' section of fence (need to finish clearing/pasture prepping it first though). My buddy the USN DR, and my middle daughter are also pictured.

This morning I am creaking and groaning. I must have done my unfair share of the tamping yesterday... Well also we messed up the string from the far end corner post we set at the 295' end and the PHD holes were way off requiring manual correction...:)

Be well all!

Happy Christmas Eve Eve!
David

Yesterday as I was leaving I noticed a tree down across a neighbor's drive. An old hackberry rotten at the roots went down with wet weather and a puff of wind. Went back to the house for the tractor, forks and chain saw.

The neighbor from across the street joined us. We had that tree cleaned up in short order and took another dead one down while we were at it.

About 3 hours - just over an hour on the tractor.

As you were leaving... Then you stopped and did something helpful for your neighbor INSTEAD of continueing on your way to wherever you were going.

You are an OUTSTANDING neighbor and a good guy to know.

Bless you sir!

Merry Christmas!

Today My hour meter went from 49 to 51.

Mike aka LstInThot came over with his Bobcat CT230 Backhoe!

First we finished the wood pasture fence (no seat time so that will be covered in that thread). But he helped build the last 24 feet.

Then we decided to go out and play tractors in the slash area.
He dug out a Locust stump and a big cedar stump. He moved dirt, he scooped slash, he leveled some areas including starting on leveling the Motorcycle shed area.

He helped me hook his york rake onto the tractor so we could test it to see how it did on my layer of slash (not great, just like TBN folks predicted. Mostly due to it floats up over the slah as it fills up. He had me rake along the fence in one spot and TOTALLY had tipped farther over then I've ever been on my Tractor! I was skeert I must admit. I am much more timid on the tractor, he is like an old pro!

The pictures start with his arrival and go to the locust stump, then the cedar stump, and then some earth moving.

It was an AWESOME day. My wife made us sandwiches and my oldest daughter was baking cookies for Christmas gifts and she brought us warm cookies out to the field were we were working. They were YUMMY :licking:.

I had an awesome day before Christmas Eve!

Thanks Mike/LstInThot!!!

Merry Christmas all!
David

May I just say...You Da Man!

I'm 56 and I do love it. The man I get my wood from is 67 and can run circles around me. I just hope I can get around like him if I'm blessed enough to reach his age and beyond.

My grandfather split his last cord of wood (by hand, of course) when he was 91.

Here's hoping....!
