I have to do about the same when I get around to painting my Case 1845 C. I was thinking about my engine hoist chained to the bed of my truck and give that a try and I only have to remove it once and replace it once.

come on guys you are talking about twice a year with a cab that cant be that heavy anyhow. Yes I would drive under it, stand under it, sit under it. Now I'm not saying use a broken winch with a knotted nylon rope, but a good winch with a wire rope, I wouldnt think twice about it.

I might be wrong but I thought we were talking about a fully enclosed cab here. Not just that sunshade shown in escavaders avatar.

CORRECT,Its a steel cab ,ive been building all winter,im not sure of the weight,2 1/8 th sheets of steel,60 ft of 3/4by 3/4angle,150feet of 1by 1 tubing,and misc bolts,steel etc ,10lbs of 6011 rods,2 10 lb spools of mig wire,4 flood lights etc etc.Iwould guess under 500 lbs,is that a good guess?
What i was thinking was some sort of pole thing,i could hang my chain falls from any one got pics?
Dont fret the safety thing,my little bx can be pushed out from under it.GOOD THOUGHTS ON THE SAFETY !!!
I need to make some sort of chain thing so i can lift all 4 corners equally at the same time.
My garage has 10 ceilings ,no way is it high enough for the chain fall and to get the cab high enough

Harbor Freight has a 1 ton telescoping gantry crane (lot#41188) on sale (<$530 this month) but its probably more than you'd need or want to spend for a one time use. Perhaps you could build something similar or get something like KennyD posted.

I know exactly what you need -- a great big trackhoe so you can lift up the cab, swing it to one side, and lower it.

Maybe that should be what I tell my wife.

Well if you don't have to sit under it then Ironhorse's boat winch idea may be the way to go. They are dirt cheap and easy to use. Just make sure you always get the ratchet locked in properly. It needs much less space than a chain block too. If you have the cable going up to a roller on the ceiling you will loose very little headroom and might even be able to use it in the garage.

GOLLY,id like to try that ,but my barn with the 10 ft ceilings ,has homemade trusses, made with boards and drywall screws Mabey if i could get a 4 by 4 on top of 5 or 6 of them to distribute the weight

If you use the existing trusses, use a piece of steel pipe to go across several of them to spread out the load. A piece of pipe thick/large enough to take the load without bending...

I second that. You need to buy a trackhoe...
