but I don't know what it was; I've never seen one before. It looked like a mini-excavator body, but no boom - it had a 6-way dozer front blade (that was heavy, not just a push blade) and a backhoe on the rear. Anyone know what it was?

I too vote for tracked dozer with a rear hoe. Common around here. Neighbor has a deere like that.

Nope...definitely not a dozer. It had a body exactly like a mini excavator...

Did it hover in the air and then disappear into the sky?

I saw a tracked skid steer (ASV, etc.) that had a rear-mounted backhoe the other day. Looked really strange. Didn't catch the brand. Looked handy.

I'm starting to wonder :D

I wish I would have caught a name on it but it passed me in traffic on a trailer headed the other direction and I saw it at the last minute.

bx23barry: No, it wasn't a mini-excavator. It had a real dozer blade up front, some type of sweep in the front that came over the cab about halfway at a 45deg angle at the top, parallel tracks like a dozer and a hoe. Must of been some type of strange forestry machine. It was either red or dark orange...

Did it have any boom? Might have been a cable layer or pipe layer...
