Just curious what the pros and cons are between planetary and bevel gear front ends. Is one a stronger design than the other? Would one hold up better than the other for snow removal with tire chains on the front?
Thanks, Scott

I would think a planetary set up would be stronger
Not sure which one would out last the other but a planetary set up would have more moving parts.

Depending on the metal used diameters and a host of other things. The planataries are normally stronger per diameter but use more moving parts.

To say which would be best with chains, that would be hard to say but less parts total might be the best.

Thanks for the feedback. I had heard of both types but wasn't sure which one is better, or why some tractors use one type and some use the other.

Scott,

Just to throw you a curve, the big Kubotas (125 HP +) use a bevel gear primary reduction and have a final planetary final reduction on the front axle. It has a 55 degree kingpin angle so it has a tight turning circle - that is why the bevel gear is used on all the Kubota front axles.
