One advantage of 4 wheel drive is you may be able to get along without chains for snow plowing if that is an intended use, especially if you have ag tires. Chains can be a clearence problem with fenders and front tie rod ends.

Tractors only had 2WD for years and years before 4WD. Farmers got by just fine then.

If you are looking for a tough, older tractor with 2wd, 3PH, around 45 HP, you would be hard pressed to beat a diesel Farmall 504. We have 2 that have been in the family since they were new. They are like the "Energizer Bunny" of tractors.
