When the brakes are on the left and the hydro pedals are on the right, I can see how you could easily apply one brake to one tire and turn in a tighter radius while pressing the hydro pedal down with your right foot.

When the brakes are on the same side as the hydro pedal, how do you use the brakes to help turn?

I am asking this specifically regarding the newer John Deere's vs. Kubotas. I don't want this to be a 'which is better' thread, only for someone to explain how its done with something like the Kubota setup.

I imagine you can just use the hand throttle that most (maybe all?) tractors have and 'power' through the turn using that and the brake of choice?

This is a hotly debated subject here on TBN, often opens up a can of worms so to speak:D

You will get answers like they use the cruise control...they swing the left foot over and use it...or they are simply not needed.

My personal feeling (I use the split/turning brakes often plowing snow) is that having them on the same side is just plain dumb.

Edit: Here are some threads:

As KennyD says, this has been HOTLY debated often with me on the receiving end, but for those who need "steering brakes", having them on the same side as the HST can be problematic.

I have been flamed so bad on this, I will "steer" clear and advise reading the LONG posts provided.

One thing has changed since all the last hoopla and that is I bought a new M8540 and have not tried using the brakes on it as I have a pull type 10' mower. Once I finish for the year and start doing other stuff, I will check to see how it reacts to the brakes.

Wish I could be more help.

I personally didn't like the idea of the brake and hydro on the same side.
That's just one of the reasons I bought the tractor I have now.

So, ah, silly question.... who has them on the same side?

This is one of those threads that I don't care about what people's opinions are on whats better, only looking for the method you use.

Of course this is a public forum so anyone can say what they want, but I would really appreciate it if you just posted the way that works best for you with the brakes on the right....

For instance,
On my Case 275, there is a gas pedal on the right with the two brakes, also a 'hand throttle' (whatever it's called :D) on the (right side of) steering column, so what I do is hold down one brake or the other, and use the steering column throttle since I can't hold my foot on the gas pedal.

I guess maybe I should have asked this instead and been more specific, so here is the new question
On the Kubota 5240 with cab, does it have a 'hand throttle' that you can use instead of the hydro pedals? and if so where is it located? Is it on the left or right?

Sorry for bringing up a sore subject but I'm pretty confident we can all be mature over my 'quick' question. Thanks guys

Sorry for the add on but one more question as well. :D
Are there any other tractor manufacturers that have the brakes on the left side other than JD?

My TC40D Hew Holland has brakes on the left, hydro pedals on the right.

FWIW, with power steering and Supersteer, my TC40D turns almost as tight as when I try using the steering brakes. It is so close, that it is not a benfit to use steering brakes.

Well, I think you are mis-understanding Hydrostat operation. the hand throttle is not the same as the hydro pedal, they are two seperate functions. the throttle controls the speed of the engine, the hydro contols the flow of the oil to the hydro motor/motors to drive the wheels. The throttle stays more or less in the same place as you operate, and you control ground speed/torque requirements with the hydro pedal. Of course there is no foot throttle on a hydro tractor (we would all need 4 feet now instead of just 3:laughing:) ) HST plus versions that autothrottle may operate differntly, I dont know. I have never driven one of them.
but to try to answer your question. I use the cruise control, as I am not very good at getting the left foot over on the right side. Also will point out I have done it only a couple of times. Very seldom need to do it. as I just back up and re-position.. that said. when pushing snow. (havent done it yet) and sidehilling, the old split brakes come in handy. I havent had to use them when backdragging, and I have done a LOT of that. as for tapping the offside brake, when slipping a tire, I just now use the differential lock.. I used to do the brake tap thing all the time on the B7500, but also the L3400 does not spin tires nearly like the B7500, more weight, better ballast, loaded tires make big difference.. also the ability to infinitly control ground speed, and back off instantly on the hydro pedal helps there too.

The only time I would use the split brakes that I can forsee, is when snowplowing, and they were darn usefull in the past. time will tell if my cruise control technique will be adequate. Of course it does not work in reverse. So to sum up: Brakes, who needs them? I havent so far, time will tell. Oh, and +1 on the New Holland with supersteer, never ever used the split brakes, on the TC33D I had, as they were never needed. that thing turned one a dime and handed you 9 cents back in change!
Good luck

K0UA,
Thank you for clearing that up, I did NOT realize how the hydro worked. It makes more sense to me now. I am not very knowledgeable on tractors yet and that is why I'm asking some questions. I appreciate you explaining that to me.
I did have many more questions but was able to find the answers by searching the many threads already posted. I just couldn't really find an answer to my specific questions so I posted this. :D
